While not the best photography museum we've been too, this is a nice museum to visit in Chalon-sur-Saone. It displays a combination of photographic equipment, historical information, and artwork. Since Chalon-sur-Saone is the birthplace of photography, I do recommend visiting.

Interesting for small and adults. Some revelations and nice presentations of old photographies. It ended with an exposition of famous pictures by Bresson and others. A pleasant break. The museum is located along the river in the centre of Chalon, is free of charge, has free boxes to store your belongings. There are steps but elevators were present as well as toilets. Large collection of books are for sale in the shop.

I only had an hour to spend the first time I went and enjoyed it so much I went back. Lots of the informative info in English, well set out and a variety of topics well worth a visit I am not a big museum person .

We didn't know the founder of photography was born in Chalon. As a result, there's a great photography museum outlining the development of photograph. Lots of interesting exhibits, plenty of videos and quite a few hands on items. My son loved it!

Do not try to take a good picture of Niepce'statue : it is in the middle of a crossroad ! But, just go to the museum of photography (access is free of charge) to see some cameras and accessories.Make sure to spare the time for a very good video about the invention of photography and its developpments. The gallery upstairs usually displays some good pictures, Stanley Greene was on with its dark black and white images of caucasian republics...The shop is limited but it is possible to find some books and postcards.

A great history of photography, that apparently started in 1816, pretty much after the Napoleonic wars, and was developed by a Mr. Niepce...In any event there are all sorts of interesting plates, and the museum is located in a very charming position in Chalon sur Saone, in Burgundy, so you can indulge in wonderful food after you have visited the mueseum!

If you've ever held a camera this modern spacious museum is a major f-stop. Niepce gets little exposure for the invention so this was enlightening to us. He was born in Chalon so focus your attention on his statue as you enter the city. The museum is framed on the bank of the Saone River and has two floors of antique cameras, Daguerreotypes and early photographs for your viewfinder. You're permitted to open your shutter in the museum and the docents are helpful. There are other photo exhibits including Kodak's many contributions to the field and the processes used in developing images. The museum doesn't charge and the city is a great walking and shopping town.

You did not know that it was Niepce and not Daguerre who invented photography? Well, after a visit to this charming museum a few steps from the birthplace of Niepce you cannot miss this historic fact. The museum is well executed and airy, showing old cameras and lenses, films and pictures. A temporary exhibition revolving around uniforms was thrilling. And for those with a tight budget: this museum is free!
