Fab. I've been coming to Nantes since I was a young boy. I have always loved the Chateau. Amazingly well preserved and completely user friendly. Plentiful and clean toilet faacilities. The moat has such a wonderful aray of wild life it is lovely to see so many ducks and geese swimming on it. Does anyone know what the orange coloured ducks are? I never saw there there (or anywhere else) before.
Dear visitor. We feel so sad you didn't appreciate your visit of the castle. We want to precise you that all has been done to keep it in its exact state. It is an old and very big monument in Nantes city center, with a free entrance for the yard and the remparts. Inside the castle, you are invited to visit the museum of Nantes history, dealing for example with Anne de Bretagne, or later on slave trade. Please come again. Our guides will have pleasure to help you discovering architecture and history.
If you like to know about the past and what made Nantes, this is a must. You'll learn more about the town's slave trading history and the Nations and people involved.
Thank you for your message, after you visited the museum of the history of Nantes in the Château des ducs de Bretagne. It is true that the museum has been created in a modern way, with many interactive tools, to present the whole history of the city of Nantes. However, the restauration totally respects the monument. The spirit of the architecture of the 15th century is always very present and visible. Our guides are at your entire disposal to help you to discover this.See you again !
This was built as a residence for the Dukes of Brittany. This castle is huge and there are a lot of buildings on the inside that you can tour. Take a walk around the entire castle above the moat to take it all in and then enter the inside. The area around the castle seems to be a bit rough as there is a lot of graffiti and a number of ruffians. There was also a heavy police presence in the area, the most police we saw on a 16 day trip. There is food available in the neighborhood surrounding the castle. We parked in a parking garage about 4 blocks south of the castle. During rush hour, the traffic is horrible here.
Very easy to access, this castle is also free to visit (except museum). The inside, well designed and more "modern", is very different than the outside which look more medieval. This castle is a reminder of how powerful and independent Brittany used to be from France. It's a great 1h visit with children and they also provide group visit with a guide or audio guide.
While studying in Nantes we often spent time lounging outside the chateau walls with our books and cigarettes. I visited the town again this May and was delighted to walk around the very picturesque battlements again.
The chateau has a beautiful exterior and the visit inside is very well conceived gathering data about all the main events in Nantes that are important for the history of France. I really enjoyed it. Occasionally it has a multimedia sources. There is a cartoon at the end of the visit that revisits all the concepts related to Nantes, it is funny and imaginative.
My boyfriend and I visited the Chateau in October. The chateau from the outside is beautiful. We had a good time, but our only criticism was that it was too modernized inside. It is converted into a museum, but kept very little of the castle charm and inside at times you would not even know it was a castle. However, the learning experience was worth it. I would still recommend a visit.
Well worth a visit, interesting displays about the history of Nantes including links to the slave trade. Interactive displays and worksheets for children. Nice café too.
We spent 4 hours here. The Museum has so much information on the history of the chateau and Nantes. Also, whilst we were here an exhibition on the history of the Samuri - fascinating. Had to stop off half way through for a rest at the creperie in the grounds. Don't neglect the rampant walk.
The Chateau de Ducs de Bretagne looks absolutely fantastic and we included it on our itinerary while on our way to Cherbourg today after reading the reviews on tripadvisor. We have been travelling from Murcia through Spain and France in our UK registered car, complete with roof pod and GB sticker. The sat nav took us to the closest car park to the Chateau, on Rue Henry IV, and we were getting rather excited about a nice walk around followed by a lunch. We were just moving into a parking space when we noticed some broken glass where a vehicle had previously been and have been around long enough to know that the windows of parked cars don't 'just break', so immediately our guard was up a bit.We got out of the car and locked it but as we where walking away we noticed three young males around the car park. One sitting on a bench, one talking excitedly on a mobile and another reading an information board, all about twenty meters from one another. Although they seemed to be doing something their eyes seemed to be on each other and us, so we started to really get a bad feeling. As we got closer to the Chateau entrance the male on the mobile seemed to get closer to our car and every so often would look at us and look away quickly. We went inside quickly and picked up an information leaflet, just inside the gate, and had a quick look back to see the male on the telephone at the side of our car. He looked up and seen us both hurriedly returning and quickly walked off accompanied by the other two young men.We are in no doubt whatsoever that had we gone inside our glass would be in the car park also. So, we are disappointed not to have seen what i'm sure is a wonderful Chateau but a tip to fellow travelers - if your car sticks out as a tourist vehicle don't park here and if you do keep your valuables with you or out of sight. We will return soon but on foot!
Impressive Chateau in the middle of Nantes, quite famous I guess. You don't have to pay any fee and can walk around it inside on all areas, like the wall etc. You get a great view above the surrounding city and it's really lovely to be in this quite big medieval castle. You can as well relax in the gardens around it, like many people did and there's a playground too. Don't miss this when in Nantes.
When I visited the Chateau, I had no idea what to expect. The frontage was undergoing renovations, so was not sure what was inside. Inside there was a museum, that was very interactive and told the story of Nantes, from the time of the Romans, to present day. There was a book in each room with translations in English, Spanish and Italian. There were interactive displays and lots of information. The chateau itself is beautiful and lovely to walk around. I would recommend for teenagers and adults - whilst there are the odd kids room, I think that they would get bored easily here.
In the central square of the Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne is an excellent little restaurant. The quality of the food was really good -we each had an exceptionally delicious vegetarian salad which filled a large plate. You can enter the Chateau without paying the admission fee if you just go to the restaurant and do not enter the Chateau Museums. It is also a really pleasant location for just enjoying a coffee. The service was excellent - very friendly and helpful, deserving a good tip!
