The walk up to the castle can be quite hard going , though truely worth it , the view is amazing and the castle worth seeing, the staff are very friendly and have a good knowledge of the history of this castle.

My husband and I walked up the glen from Dollar, a long but beautiful walk to the top, where the castle sits. The lady in the shop/ticket entrance was very welcoming and helpful, giving us a little talk about the castle before we went round. There is a lovely 360 degrees view from the roof and many opportunities to view the castle from the road. The castle tower still had it's roof but inside is totally bare. £5.50 is a steep price to pay for entry but as National Trust members we had free entry.

We visited on the St Andrew's day weekend, parking just out of Dollar and then approaching the castle from up the hill behind from which there are stunning views of the Firth of Forth. The custodian in the ticket office was very pleasant and helpful and we enjoyed our visit of this place which has obviously seen so much history. How on earth did they manage to build the place in this location? It must be even better in the summer when the terraced garden must capture lots of sunshine. The cafe was closed but we were welcome to use the coffee machine if we wanted. We enjoyed the walk downhill through the glen back in to the centre of Dollar where we found a very good eatery. A lovely day out and would recommend it.

We were sorry to hear you struggled on your recent visit to Castle Campbell. Our print and website do reference the uphill climb and the average walking time but we agree that it could be difficult to negotiate your way with a buggy not designed for outdoor terrain. Castle Campbell is a beautiful monument in a glorious setting which is regularly visited by families with young children. Given current access issues however, it may not be suitable for those with mobility issues or unused to outdoor walking. Some of our other family-friendly properties may be more suitable for you including Stirling Castle, Linlinthgow Palace and Craigmillar Castle which all have on-site parking. Went for a 40th birthday party. Service was not very good as they had another party in and we tended to be forgotten. The restaurant room is decorated rather dark - not enough lighting so appears glum and not an inviting room.

beautiful hike year round with a 500 year old castle. Great value for a historic walk around a very neat castle. Fantastic views of the valley and surrounding hills.Good for kids and adults. Lots of stairs as you would expect. Great food in town of dollar.

We made the mistake of reading the sign which said don't drive up but the potholed road would have been ok and saved a lot of steep walking - the walk back down through the glen was nice Another good castle to visit great views out as well

Interesting and easy to get around ideal for kids with a short attention span. Some great walks to along the burn of sorrow and up it the hills . There's also the Kings Seat in Dollar for some refreshments afterwards

The tour guides at the castle were so helpful and full of information. They made sure my grand-kids were involved in the whole experience with a game involving things of history/interest. It made sure the kids went into everything to answer the questions and they got a prize at the end of the visit. Well Done! My uncle drove us to the top parking lot of the castle but you can be driven right up to the entrance of the castle if there are any issues with walking the last little bit. Nestled in between the Burn of Care on one side and the Burn of Sorrow on the other, the castle is impressive. The view from the tower looking down on the town of Dollar is worth it alone. You must follow the path down through Dollar Glen - gorgeous and so green. Not a difficult walk but make sure you have decent shoes - highly recommended.

There are definitely bigger castle ruins, but Castle Campbell is great if you are in the area. The best of it may be the surrounding area. Just the grounds are nice, but the walk to it, especially if you go the "scenic route" (which is down through what like a non-tropical rain forest) is phenomenal. Great water falls. It is a rugged walk, so don't attempt it if you don't have good slip-resistant footwear and the health for a little hike. We are from Colorado, where we hike at 12,000 feet, so for us it was a walk in the park, but for non-hikers it might be a bit difficult. The path is hard to see from the parking lot, but easy from the Castle itself. As you are leaving the Castle, you'll see a path off to the right. It is longish, but does eventually make its way to the lower (main) parking area. If you want a phenomenal ruin, and can only see one, this may not be the one, but if you are in the area and are up for a scenic walk then I highly recommend visiting Castle Campbell.

Castle Campbell was closed by the time we got there (a constant issue in Scotland, as most sights close at 17:30). Nonetheless, we were able to explore some of the woodland around it, which was dramatic and beautiful. Castle aside, I'd recommend making the trip here just for the walks around the forest.The castle itself was built in the 14th century and used up into the 17th (and, as such, likely has architectural details reflecting this lifespan). Since we weren't able to go inside, however, this review doesn't account for the castle itself.One word of warning: the road getting here is very steep. My wife had some trouble getting our poor little four-cylinder stick shift up certain parts, due to the incline and mud. I imagine it could be difficult to access during the rainy season.

There is a long steep climb from the carpark but it was worth it. A small parly restored castle. The walk back through Dollar Glen was magical with a stream and moss everywhere.

Take your time and walk up Dollar Glen to the castle. Some places are quite steep but the views are worth every step, you can catch your breath in the castle gardens overlooking the village.

Nearly put off by the 45 minute walk up hill and down dale in drizzling rain. Wear good walking shoes and go at your own pace and you won't be disappointed . There are two levels to park we parked at the first level which made it a longer walk. Once in the castle head to the top to see the spectacular view. Has the feel of being well thought out and lived in. The prison pit sends chills thinking about it. Well worth all the exercise. Small gift shop at the entry if you are interested in Campbell history.
