This place is very fun. I love watching the videos about him. If you spend time you can really see how good it is.

This is a simple museum containing information about John Muir's life, including his childhood in Dunbar and his subsequent time in Canada and the US. It's informative and eloquent and you get a very good idea of his early life and of how his passion for nature was formed. In places it's quite moving.

This free museum, with friendly staff who are passionate about John Muir, tells the fascinating story of the father of world conservation, from his early life in Dunbar through his life in America to his heritage. He is shamefully little-known over here although a household name in America. It's small enough to enjoy in half an hour but has enough to keep you or your kids engaged for longer if you have the time. Dogs are allowed on the ground floor.

Interesting free museum in Dunbar town centre. The museum takes you through from John's childhood to his death. It is all reading boards giving the information but as I hadn't heard of him before visiting the museum found it informative. There are 3 floors each level is a stage in his life. From a small child who was beaten by his father regularly how he emigrated to America and became the founder of the National Parks.

I am usually not so keen on visiting different kind of famous persons’ houses and birthplaces, but this little museum really is something else! We were met by dedicated, informative and helpful staff, lovely! Before this visit I did not know much about John Muir at all, so it was very interesting to learn more about his extraordinary life works with conservation and his personal destiny, and of course about his testament to the rest of the world. Impressing.

This is a small but beautifully presented museum with a fine inspiring subject.The lady (Frances I think) who met us at reception and introduced us to Muir's life was simply wonderful. And we didn't have to put up with the hard sell one gets about membership when visiting a National Trust or English Heritage venure.Well done.

We enjoyed a walk around this museum as we knew very little about John Muir. It was great to learn all about his life and his work in conservation. It was very informative and enjoyable. The staff are lovely too and happy to chat with you.

We popped in to kill some time before our train, and were very glad we did! The staff were welcoming and informative, and the exhibition was very interesting. You only need about 20 minutes to see it all. We learned a lot about John Muir - a fascinating character!

This is a cleverly conceived museum within an old building, Muir's birthplace. It was small but gave you a good flavour of his achievements and historical context. Very welcoming introductory speech by a museum volunteer and a good array of literature to peruse in the bookshop.

The museum is very well laid out in the way that it interprets the early life of John Muir, then goes on to describe his time in America and finally covers his legacy. I found the story truly inspirational with the issues that John Muir confronted just as relevant today. The staff are friendly and only too happy to answer questions. Best of all though, the museum is free to visit. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the great outdoors and the need to protect wild land.

Interesting place. Free entry, donations welcome. Tells of John Muir's life, showed some of his botanical collections. Final floor has interactive games, especially good for children, on how to improve our eco footprint.

serendipitous find on a birdwatching trip to come to Dunbar and find the rich history of John Muir, renowned in Northern California's redwood country!

As someone who has hiked the Muir Trail in California, I found this lovely little museum well organized, very family friendly and filled with interesting items about the great John Muir. Well worth a couple of hours and the gentleman who was at reception was knowledgeable and very friendly. Excellent in all respects.

My rating is based on this being a neighborhood niche museum. Obviously, it's not the National Museum of Scotland.The young docent when I was there was very knowledgeable about John Muir and the birthplace. He sandwiched me in between two school groups who were using interactive devices to study. There is a connection between John Muir and my original home state of Wisconsin, as well as a connection between him and my adopted state of Arizona (the Grand Canyon). He answered all my questions and provided further research pointers.Great small museum.Kathy NoltzeArizona
