Years ago every town had a gasworks, but they are all gone, so this is a unique preserved example. Visit on a 'steam' day when well informed and enthusiastic volunteers get the works running and explain it all 0 great stuff.

Small and not expensive(£2 or £1 for concessions) Video on gas making made in the 70's and looks dated but all the better for it. I didn't know anything about gasworks before so pleased that this place is preserved as it was. They apparently also run several steam days throughout the season. Staff ( one lady!) very friendly and helpful including giving us restaurant recommendation. All in all a lovely little find.

Well worth a visit if you have an hour to devote to seeing how gas reached our homes in time gone by. Well preserved exhibits and knowledgeable guide.

Very interesting, and the person who gave us the tour, was very knowledgeable. There was also a DVD on the Gasworks that used to be situated in Millport.

This is a lovely little low key museum highlighting part of our industrial heritage which was once widespread but is now almost gone. The museum houses the equipment used to produce gas from coal until north sea gas took over. Some areas still even smell of the sulphurous coal gas. There is a small exhibition of old gas powered equipment, and a video explaining the process. On the "steam days" held on some summer weekends the furnaces are stoked up and the steam powers a whistle. A good museum to visit if you are passing through Biggar, or combined with other local museums to make a day of it.

worth a look, this is one of a few museums in Biggar. Really enjoyed the visit.

A small industrial museum but very interesting. Takes you back in time to when many small towns had one of these.
