Since we were staying next door in the Abbey Hotel, it was well worth the visit. Staff friendly and gave us lots of information on the history etc.
We were staying in Great Malvern close to the Priory and decided to visit , it was most interesting the attendents were helpful and informative. The building was very interesting and well worth the visit
It was raining when we arrived at Great Malvern so we looked around the Priory. The stained glass windows are impressive as is a lot of the carving, both timber and stonework. The next day in the sun the nearby Priory Park was worth a stroll round to see the early spring bulbs in flower,
Fine stained glass and misericords. New organ of recital quality. Some interesting statues and tombs. Small but agreeable precinct.
I liked this huge building, it very interesting, obviously a working church, and no charge for admittance . Great history and some explanations around. I would gave liked to buy a guide book but could not find one. Grounds are beautifully kept.
Malvern Priory is one of my favourite places and I visit it regularly. There is so much history to be found. Look for the wardrobe like exit which opens onto a single gas lamp among the trees. C.S. Lewis attended services here when he studied at Malvern College, it's said to have been inspiration for The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe; where the children enter Narnia through the wardrobe and see a gas lamp shining in the woods. Also look for The grave of Darwins daughter whom he brought to Malvern when she was ill for the water cure, sadly it didn't work.
The Priory is a gorgeous building but (as macabre as it may sound) I love the cemetery outside because it oozes history and it is as pretty as it a bit of a chill maker to me. The priory itself is very much in use but if you go on a quiet day, it is always amazing what you can learn from its walls. It is small but worth a visit.
Beautuful architecture, I'm useless at dates but it's pretty old! It was lovely and warm inside too - we were admiring it from outside when the vicar or similar arrived who was very friendly and not at all pushy, he welcomed us in sincerely. The stain glass windows were beautiful and I especially loved the coloured sunlight from them cast on to the stone walls inside. Well worth a visit!
This is so worth a visit if you are going to Malvern. The building is lovely inside and out. The stain glass windows are beautiful and a couple of them unusual, ceiling is fabulous. Such a special place..
love the malvern hills, but it was like picadilly circus on xmas day, Great to find that St. Ann's well cafe was open on Xmas day for a welcome coffee and homemade soup
I had the pleasure of singing in the Priory the other day and it was brilliant, the people were lovely and complimentary, the church felt alive and exciting as well as being warm and calming, strange but true, well worth a visit.
Great Malvern Priory was started in 1068 and was threatenedwith destruction at the Reformation in the 1500's by Henry Vlll. The Priory Church itself was redeemed, so it is said, by the local community, who wanted to keep it as their parish church, at a huge cost. Thank God that they did as it is a beautiful example of a Norman built church. It is a haven for those who seek calm and tranquility and a point of great interest for those who just love churches. One cannot visit Great Malvern without seeing the church tower standing proud and it must be visited. There is no charge to visit - but obviously all donations are welcome, as it is very expensive to maintain. I love it!
whatever your beliefs or experience, the Priory is a very high energy building awash with peace and tranquility. Certainly a place to be for calming the buzz of life and enjoying the timeless energies of previous generations of dedication.
It became the parish church at the dissolution. It has very large collection of over 1, 000 medieval floor tiles, Misericords from 1340 and lots of medieval stained glass. Beautiful place to visit.
There is so much to see here but it was the modern stained glass windows that caught my attention. Also the very well equipped childrens' area. Friendly and knowledgeable guides.
