Dawn on holiday

We drove through on our way to Penrith but what a treat. After the commercialism of Windermere, Ullswater is quiet and unspoilt. We stopped for a coffee at the steamer pier at the Southern end and as there were very few people around (despite it being half term) it was so tranquil and unspoilt. The views reflected in the still water were stunning. But shhhh ... don't tell anyone its so beautiful as we want to keep it for ourselves!

We decided to take a detour to the Lake District on our way back home to Suffolk from Alston. We are so glad we did. We didn't spend a long time here but you don't need to to realise it's absolute serenity and beauty. We have decided based on this short visit that we will holiday here next year.

I have visited this a while ago, but still imprinted in my mind. I think it was the best summer family holiday I have been to. We were located in Windermere but drove to Ullswater. The view is breathtaking and so magical. Would love to visit in Winter however, to see the view with snow and to encounter less tourists around :)

Come to visit due to a friend living near by and making the most of the trip up went to the lake it was November so it wasn't warm and sunny it was dry and breezy but was able to have a lovely walk around. It was so beautiful and peaceful. Few others walking around too enjoying the view also. My friend said it is very different in the summer with a bit of a rock beach and being able to go and take a dip so I will be going back up for another visit and maybe a camp on the campsite nearby. I absolutely loved the place even when it was cold and dull. There was a little village nearby too with a few lovely little pubs.

Probably everything that could be said about Ullswater has been said....it doesn't matter what time of year, the scenery around the lake and from on the lake is absolutely stunning. There is so much to see and it really is the answer to any photographer's prayer! There are walks, steamer trips, history and plenty of places to eat and drink all combined with some of the best views in the Lake District. The steamer allows you to combine a trip on the lake with walking...eg Howtown to Glenridding vis Hallin Fell or you can venture further up into Matterdale for yet more unspoilt and peaceful countryside. If you are really adventurous, there is always Helvellyn to climb or visit the family friendly Aira Force. I find the views are most spectacular on a cold frosty winter's day but spring, summer and autumn enables you to see the lake and surrounding fell sides from a different perspective. There are plenty of carparks which are all. I think, pay and display....in some you will need to remember your car registration though as the car park at Glenridding is camera controlled. If you are in or anywhere near the lakes, Ullswater is a must visit. Make sure you have plenty of life in the camera battery!

There's many ways to enjoy Ulswater, but my favourite by far, is to climb the small Hallin Fell. It's perfect for kids or those less fit, but, though short, it is quite steep. The top affords wonderful views of the lake for not being the highest spot around, it present you neatly into the middle of everything. Take a picnic, take your time, have a nap, stop, listen and stare.

Absolutely beautiful here, my favourite place in Lake District. It's quiet, serene and picturesque. If you go to the Lake District this place is a must visit.

This lake is one of the better ones to visit, it is not isolated but it is easy to enjoy plenty of tranquility whilst out walking. There are so many options walking, i normally like to get up high, but there are lake side options possible. The boat trip from Glenridding to quieter places is a good option to reduce walk times and get off the beaten track a little. A truely wonderful place.

We love Ullswater for its inspiring views and outstanding natural beauty and also because it is so tranquil compared to the 'honeypot' areas of the Lake District such as Windermere and Ambleside. It lacks the tourist trappings of these busy places. So if you are looking for the Lake District's natural beauty without the bustling crowds, we strongly recommend Ullswater as a destination. Walking in this area is paradise, especially in reasonable weather, though it has atmosphere in all weathers and seasons if you are equipped for rain and cold.

Why is Ullswater so overlooked as a destination? For those who just want peace and quiet with their beautiful scenery, then Ullswater is perfect. It isn't touristy like Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick, just tranquil and restful.Admittedly we had to travel to Keswick to do a weeks shopping but we didn't hang around in getting back to this area.

Gorgeous scenery, plenty of spots along the lake to stop the car and find your own little spot. Stunning views. Great to launch a kayak or dinghy and just enjoy.....

These photographs were taken from my trip to the Lake District at Ullswater. Truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. So secluded and peaceful, I could only try capture its beauty. An adventurous drive through Kirkstone Pass through the mountains leads you to this lake I couldn't believe how amazing it was. The water was so still and quiet and the clouds passed meters above your head. Unbelievable! it was unlike anywhere I’ve ever been.

Ullswater provided a very relaxing break from city life, particularly enjoying the boat hire and a brilliant hour in the lake on a very sunny afternoon.

Beautiful lake with some fantastic local pubs and walks. We had a great holiday here. We stayed in Pooley Bridge but also got to see Howtown and Glenridding. In fact, there is a great 7 mile walk between the two. Although the best walk is a 3 mile route called Hallen Fell which is a circular route from Howtown which gives you stunning lakeside views and then takes you up the hillside to see amazing panoramic views of the rolling hills. Be prepared to climb some rocky surfaces, tiny gates and say hello to lots of sheep.

we didnt want to pay again to stop over at this lake, so we drove a little longer and found a few cars parked near by, and we noticed it was freeeee. was bingo..!! we parked the car there and just opposite to the road, we climbed down and tada we had the lake right there. It is a pebble lake, so we took out our picnic rug and few breezers to just chill and click pics of this beauty too. There we found a bottle floating in the water and obviously we opened it and read the MSG and in return we also wrote a second message.and threw it back in the water.it was a wonderful time. we had a nice nap there, second family around us had a small barbecue , wasn't sure if that was allowed though, but they also seemed to enjoy lot.
