A beautifully designed garden a few kilometers from the city. Even in March it had things to appreciate. Water, rockeries, winter-flowering shrubs, chinese garden etc. Well worth a few hours.

This garden is in Haren, south of Groningen. Take the bus not the train, it gets you nearer to the Garden, even then it is a good walk to get there. This is a wonderfully large botanical garden, well labeled and maintained. The Chinese Garden in particular is superb. If you take your Schatkaart, which is available for free at the tourist information VVV you get a 20% discount

Bit of a swine to find as they don't seem to put many signposts up, but worth it. I am not usually keen on gardens but I really liked these. Loved the scale of the place and the variety. One tip - don't miss the bees!

Nice garden and park but some parts are neglected. A Chinese section set around a souvenir store. I can imagine that locals buy a season ticket if there are no other free parks in the neighborhood but this is definitely not a tourist destination

A broad collection of plants in the gardens and the greenhouse, the Chinese garden is especially attractive. Plenty of space as well if you want to get some quiet away from the crowds.

Quite large garden area ideal for a Sunday walk and relaxation. On a good weather provides an alternative to a city walk. Many different gardens inside, some of them sem to lack maintenance resources. There is still a lot see, so reserve enough time. You can even view inside a bee nest.The gaden is outside the city and can be reached by bus and a 10 minute walk. Of course you should bike there like the locals do. A cafe with a sun terrace provides refreshments by a pool with fish, birds and frogs.

Hortus is lovely for that mid-afternoon wander and then tea at the Pavilion. Very relaxing. Maybe not so much for younger children.

It's beautiful when you love flowers, trees and other nature to watch this garden. There are also nice buidlings to see and water. If you have the oppertunity and you like these parks and gardens, go.

Delightfully beautiful collection (both indoor and out) of plants from different biomes. I love the palms and the orchids! Small enough to do with (small) children within them getting bored.

Hortus is the biggest botanical garden in the Netherlands. Made up of smaller themed gardens Hortus has given us a lot of inspiration for planting in our own garden. The arboretum is beautifully laid out so that you feel your walking through many different landscapes.The gardens have had problems in the past due to a lack of public support which is a real shame, it really is a good afternoon out with the kids. The small avery has an amusing miner bird who mimmicks telephones and other sounds. There are glass houses full of tropical plants and rescued parrotsThere is a small playground for the kids and chinees pavilion where they serve cakes and snacks.Everything looks a bit tired but the staff are friendly and helpfull and I get the impression a lot of them are volunteers. As we live reasonably lose by we have a familly card for the year.

Visited 30 April. To early to watch blooming flowers. Big garden with lots of variety. Unfortunately maintenance not up to scratch (understand they have suffered for lack of public support recent years).

Hortus Haren is the largest botanical garden in the Netherlands, but flowers were not the main attraction on my October visit. My Dutch hostess and I started by wandering through the greenhouses, a pleasant refuge from gray skies, where you can imagine yourself in a subtropical forest or spiky cactused desert (two different greenhouses). The greenhouses are also home to a few "rescued" parrots. One big green one says "Hello" in English and can mimic a very human laugh.Just beyond the greenhouses is the insectarium, a small one that specializes in really big creepy things, with tarantulas and a scorpion in addition to actual insects. The Dutch word for cockroach is "kakkerlak," and they have some giant ones.We enjoyed the "mystic" approach through a tunnel to the Celtic gardens where we spent about a half hour reading the Celtic tree horoscopes first for ourselves and then for all our families. That is, she was reading them to me, because they're in Dutch. If you don't speak Dutch, take a dictionary with you.The Chinese teahouse is also in a lovely setting, although the food is authentically Dutch. My friend had "belegte brod met Brie" (a French roll with big hunks of Brie cheese on it.) I had the most expensive lunch on the menu, 2.50 Euros, whose name I forget but it was essential a hot dog served inside a crusty French roll. Delicious. It's a very pleasant place to wander around, even in October. I imagine the rose garden, show garden, English garden, etc. etc. must be gorgeous in the summer. If you have small children, there is also a little playground.

El Hortus es un enorme complejo de jardines entre la ciudad de Groningen y el pueblo de Haren (al sur de la ciudad). Lo más interesante es la réplica de un jardín histórico Chino, creo del siglo 18. Sobre todo en primavera y verano es espectacular. Puedes tomar fotos y tus amigo creerán que has estado en China.

Leuk: De thematuinen bieden een grote verscheidenheid: bijv. de Chinese Tuin, de Ierse Tuin of de Rotstuin.Vrijwilligers zorgen voor het voortbestaan.Niet leuk: De tropische tuin in de kas is verleden tijd....

Чудный ботанический сад, от Гронингена совсем недолго на электричке.Особенно понравился японский сад с огромными карпами в пруду.
