hugo grotius is very important in international law. its great to see.his statute here, see his face, and the tomb inside the church nearby.
The statue of Hugo de Groot, aka Grotius, standing tall in the city centre pays tribute to a great scholar of law, who is widely regarded as the father of international law. Born in Delft, de Groot wrote in Dutch and Latin. As a attorney at the Hague, de Groot worked for the Court of Holland. Eventually, de Groot was imprisoned and exiled. Later he served as a ambassador of Sweden - in France. The great statue of de Groot is a testament to this visionary legal scholar. Hugo de Groot made it possible for all world visitors to visit this beautiful city and benefit from his work on international law. Anyone who is in the area of the city centre cannot miss the statue of de Groot. Indeed, it is a must see in that it is very prominent in the city centre. Highly recommended!
This huge statue of Hugo de Groot is located at the central market in Delft between two landmarks. As we all know Hugo was an eminent legal author and philosopher in 17th century.
This monument towers the centre of town opposite some great landmarks to check out. Whilst in town make sure to head up to the top of the church tower (closed on windy days).
Hugo de Groot, also known as Hugo Grotius, was an eminent legal author, theorist and philosopher born in 1583 in Delft, Netherlands, who lived until the mid 17th Century. He is widely considered to be a founder of international and maritime law.The statue which commemorates him is situated in front of the Nieuwe Kerk in the vast main square of Delft. It is a very impressive and imposing structure. Thankfully, when I took the attached photograph, the obligatory pigeon or seagull which normally sits on the heads of statues was for once missing. Possibly it had gone for lunch?
It was the only thing on the square we could see as stands were being erected for the taptoe competition over the weekend. His statue got more play than Willem van Oranje.
A statue of the founder of International law on the town square of Delft. It was the first time i heard about him so i got a history lesson at the same time visting a beautiful city.
Loved sitting in the square watching Delft go by. The day we were there a couple of different big bands were playing and was very pleasant in the sun. Enjoyed watching a pigeon stand on the head of the statue for a very long time - hours - surveying all around him - not in the least perturbed by the human activity. Always wonder what the pigeons make of their spectacular roost. Seems a shame statues such as these become that as they are intended to honour great men - hardly ever women!
It is important to remember the people of the past that had such a huge impact on the way we are able to live today. Hugo Grotius was one of the founders of international and maritime law. With his ideas he broke the status quo on the seas and opened up the way for the Dutch to go on into their golden age. Today this statue and the Tomb of Hugo Grotius are a kind of pilgrims destination for people from all over the world who are involved in the practice of law. There is always the chance to strike up an interesting conversation with the people who are visiting. A must visit location for people who love politics and law.
The area that this monument is in is truly charming! The monument itself is very well done and worth taken a break to look at. The architecture in this area is lovely, and really sets of this lovely statue. There are plenty of charming shops and restaurants in this area.
Hugo de Groot or Hugo Grotius is considered to be the founder of international law. He believed that arbitration and discussions were the best way to prevent wars between countries and his ideas and influences can be seen in the form of the international peace and arbitration courts in Den Haag. The statue erected in the main market square is very impressive and shows Hugo de Groot in the right vein. I feel some more description of Hugo de Groot, the person and also some details about his work should be mentioned on a plaque around the statue as many tourists do not know about him, which is quite a shame actually.
A beautiful statute of a great expert in law. Of interest is the little memorial plate immediately north of the stature, where DSC ("Delftsch Studenten Corps", an important student fraternity) listed the "motto's" they used since 1993 for the celebration of each of their 5-year anniversaries.
It's easy to take in this statue, on Delft's market square, between the new church and old town hall. Hugo de Groot is often considered the father of international, or sometimes maritime, law.The statue is 'just' a statue, though.Try to visit on Thursdays, when the market square is filled with stalls selling excellent cheeses, groceries, and your regular market wares.
Hugo staat op Markt, helaas geen informtatie bij het standbeeld. Ik vind hem zelf beetje in de weg staan. Niet speciaal
