Delft is an old historic mansion Holland. There are channels that perfectly complement the building. Not only Oude Kerk (the Old Church) is important and beautiful.
very interesting historically and visually fine architecture and interesting artifacts, well worth the low entrance fee You can.learn much about the history of The Netherlands and its Royal Family
this church locked the guy killed the founding fathder of netherlands, for money! other than this, its.a pretty building from outside. good for photos.
The Oude Kerk "Old Church" dominates the skyline of Delft, a quaint city in southern Holland. You don't really have to look for the church or ask for directions. The Old Church towers above the smaller cottage buildings that encompass the surrounding pedestrian streets and the Markt Square. So picturesque, the dark red brick stands out especially with the black clock and white numbers. Sitting adjacent to the canal, with trees, flowers the magnificent church is beautiful - and after I returned home I discovered it leans, a bit.Oddly, when looking at my photos I believed I must have tilted my camera when photographing Oude Kerk! I was surprised. Later at home, I forgot about the photos and I researched the year the church was built (1246). After a little additional research, I discovered the tower actually leans. It is believed the location of Oude Kerk just next to the canal may have left the foundation unstable. Renovations of the church over the centuries resulted in corrective measures to try to straighten the Old Church Tower. Unbelievably, my photos are accurate and the church leans. The four turrets at the top are more vertically aligned, giving the tower a slightly kinked appearance. Another leaning tower located in Delft! Beautiful Oude Kerk!
The Oude Kerk is an old Gothic style church. Quite simple especially when compared to the Baroque churches elsewhere in Europe. Massive stone and brick building, quite awe inspiring. The ability to climb the tower is amazing and there are incredible views from the top. Well worth the admission. While not heavy on stained glass there are a couple dozen stained windows that I think are each stand alone stories within them, Adam & Eve, and so on. Quite beautiful with the right light. Probably my favorite church in all of Holland.
The inside of this nearly 770 year old church is well worth the 2-3 euro admission that also includes a visit in the tower of the Nieuw Kerk that overlooks the Delft Markt Square (and pretty much all of Delft, and even Rotterdamn on a clear day). On our tour we were told a wonderful story about the church and the convent that was across the road. On one particularly stormy night with the wind howling down Oude Delft and battering the already leaning tower of the Oude Kerk (due to leather liner leakage during construction on the foundation) a nun of the convent near Sint Agathaplien rushed into the headmasters office worried about the possible tipping of the tower on to her part of the building. The priest looked at her and said, "Don't worry sister, we are in the Lord's hands." To which she replied, "It's not my faith in God I'm questioning this evening, but that in the men who built the tower." Anyhow, interesting story. True? No idea, but when I walk by the Oude Kerk everyday on my way to work I think of the fleeing nuns.
We visited Amsterdam in April and for a day side trip went to Delft where we visited this church and the "New Kerk" on a single money saving entrance ticket. This church was quite beautiful in a very simple way. It was lovely to hear the silence. In the floor at the front of the church is supposedly the final resting place of the noted artist Vermeer. Well worth a visit.
Again - Sadly I did not allow enough time to fully explore this amazing church and its history. You can buy a money saving Combined Ticket for entry into the New & Old Kerks
This is a beautiful place of contemplation and meditation. Atmosphere is very different from Nieuwe Kerk.
A very important monument and so much to know about! Absolutely to research the history of all this , who is buried there, what are the meanings of certain artworks, so interesting!
