For starters, the building is one of the best designs by the iconic Dutch architect Berlage. The collection has some great surprises and a number of 20th century masterworks. Often they hold top quality special exhibits, that if a bit small compared to major exhibits in more famous museums, still are worth a trip the Den Haag just to see. And for kids and kids at heart in the basement is one of the best attempts I've seen at an interactive and playful 'art' experience.

I loved the Gemeentemuseum. I found its exhibits wide and varied. There are fine examples of modern art (paintings and sculptures), period costumes and fashion and decorative pottery (Delthware). I was very impressed by many of the exhibits and would thoroughly recommend a visit to anyone who appreciates all sorts of art.Following a visit to Amsterdam last year I purchased a museum card (museumkaart), which allowed free entry to a number of museums all over Netherlands, for a year. Access to Gemeentemuseum is included but I was charged an extra 3.50 Euros for the temporary exhibition of works by Mark Rothko. It appears that if temporary exhibitions are on you are obliged to pay the extra for them because they are not segregated from the standard exhibitions. Its an interesting building with the rooms decorated in an art-deco(ish) style. It’s also a bit of a rabbit warren with rooms off shooting from rooms. You spend a good deal of time doubling back on yourself to return to a doorway or corridor to see exhibits that you by passed earlier. The quality of art is superb. There are many interesting pieces worthy of note and quite thought provoking. Fashion is not usually a subject that interests me, but there was an exhibition of period costumes. The skill and delicacy in making them is quite impressive. There was a modern replica of a dress worn by Nicole Kidman on a movie also on display. She must have had a very slim waist to wear that outfit.I would thoroughly recommend a visit to Gemeentemuseum due to its beautiful collection in a fantastic designed building. There is also an associated photography museum (Fotomuseum) in the adjoining building to the Gemeentemuseum which is worth a look whilst you are in the vicinity.

Loved everything. If travelling with kids, send them to the basement to be thoroughly occupied, educated and entertained for several hours while you enjoy the upper floors.

A superb exhibition. Why? The sheer power of the paintings brought joy to my heart and tears to my eyes. And I was not the only one! Far from it. Exhibition ends 1 March, so please hurry to see. The paintings are a riot of colour as well as symphonies in black or gray or dark purple. Photos are only a pale reflection. To give u an idea. Best way to skip the long line of visitors is to print ticket and supplement beforehand. The audio tour is outstanding as well. Short and to the point and very informative.

A visit to this lovely museum is definitely to be recommended, not only for its variety (silver, paintings, ceramics, furniture etc.), but especially for the interesting building that houses this interesting artcollection.

it may not be flashy, but it really is a place we regularly drop in and always fid it interesting. Solid base and interesting changing exhibits, and mainly no disappointing nonsense.

Rothko exhibition poor hanging and space and very noisy...not a serene experience as it is in London.early Mondrians give no clue of later...nice food!

Sure, the Rothko's were nice and the fashion exhibition was pretty great. What took us by surprise though was the permanent 'Wonderkamers' exhibit. I don't think I've ever had so much interactive fun in a museum. We had an absolute blast. Definitely recommend and I will definitely return to finish the other games.

The Gemeentemuseum Den Haag features a large permanent collection of the works of Piet Mondriaan. They also have wonderful pieces from Van Gogh. The temporary exhibits are always attractively presented. At the moment, a Mark Rothko exhibition is finishing up. Overall this is a wonderful art space. After an hour or two viewing art, wander down to the cafeteria area. It is now a covered courtyard. Nice for taking a break. There is the traditional indoor cafeteria but also a cart in the covered courtyard. May choices for sandwiches, warm snacks, lunches and drinks. We had a sandwich and a coffee after the Rothko exhibit before exploring the rest of the museum. If you like to keep memories of your museum visit, photography is allowed (strictly NO FLASH) except where posted. As a hint, buy your ticket or special exhibition supplement (Museumkaart holders) on-line and avoid the line entering. (http://www.gemeentemuseum.nl/en/admission-times-and-charges/buy-your-tickets-online) Audio guides are also available for a little extra but well worth it.

I went there to see the Mark Rothko exhibition and it was amazing. Also, if you want to see the art of Piet Mondriaan, this is a good place to visit.

Lots to see here if you like modern art, and lots to see even if you don't. Currently there is a fashion exhibit set up that was so intricate and beautiful; it was rooms and rooms of historical costumes, all the way up to modern runway fashion. I loved seeing the fashion, and the Picassos. There is a gift shop, but it was nothing special. The café looks very airy and welcoming though I didn't have time to stop on my visit. There is a very long line to get in. I would suggest buying your tickets on line (make sure you do it when you have access to a printer) so you can skip the queue. We waited about 25 minutes on the rainy day of our visit.

I was based in Amsterdam, bit it is close to the Hague. So, got a meeting there to see this museum... first of all the art deco architecture is a perfect scenario of the 1930's. Sometimes you will feel of you are at a swimming pool, but take it easy... it is just one of the most amazing museums and soon you will be addicted to the architecture! With a collection that goes from the late 1800's to nowadays, you will see one of the most amazing rooms in a museum ever: many Francis Bacon combined with a marvelous Bruce Nauman carroussel of dead animals... and the next door, an unbelievable and beautiful Louise Bourgeois installation. Go! Don't miss it!

I recently visited the Gemeentemuseum to see the Mark Rothko exhibit. I thought the show was organized beautifully! The only thing I was disappointed about was that even with the museum card there was an extra fee but it was only 3,50€. If you are a fan of modern and contemporary art this is a great place!

I took my 2.5 year old son to the museum this week, and we had a good time. There are greeters in the hall when you arrive. They can be helpful, but in my case they were an annoyance. One of them stopped me because I had a child, and she tried to get me to go to Museon next door (because it's geared toward kids). I knew where I was going, so she only caused us to have to wait in line behind the people who weren't stopped by her. The greeters are good if you want to ask a question though. The line is quite long, even if you arrive a few minutes before the doors open (at 11) as there are often several tour buses full of people. Also, even with the Museumkaart you still have to pay €3.50, hence the long line. As a side note, the museum will be open until 9 p.m. on Fridays in February for the Rothko exhibit as it has been so popular.Once you actually get inside the museum, the exhibits are very good. The building itself is also architecturally interesting, which is an added bonus.
