A short bus ride out of the city centre gets you to the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, housed in a quiet and peaceful converted convent. The route through the museum is designed so that each room tells the story of when they were introduced to Portugal and how they were made, also how they developed over time to reflect the Portuguese personality. Tiles on display date back hundreds of years giving you a real sense of their history whilst the modern exhibits bring the development of this beautiful and practical artform right up to date. The setting is delightful too, with cool cloisters and a large chapel highly decorated in gold. There is a good sized cafe with an outside seating area in a shaded courtyard which was also cool, peaceful and relaxing.
Plan 2H. Tourist bus stop just the other side of the street.Be sure to reserve at least 30 minutes for the Madre Deus Church accessible from the Museum. Gorgeous with relics of several saints.
I found this museum a gem. One of the great beauties of Portugal is the tile work and this museum presents a gorgeous array of styles and different traditions. From the capricious and whimsical and fun to the terrific Geometric both of old and modern traditions. All housed in a lovely old building, nice book gift store as well.
Honestly, I never thought I would be interested in going to a tile museum. We were encouraged to go by other visitors, and I'm glad we did. It only takes a few minutes in Lisbon to realize the significance of the tile in the city's architecture. And at this museum one can view a multitude of tiles (or azulejos as they are known in Portuguese) and learn a bit about its place in Portugal history. The museum is housed in the Madre de Deus Convent, which has one the most beautifully ornate chapels I have seen, comparable to any in Rome!I think you can enjoy the museum in less than two hours. We ate at the cafe and found the food to be quite enjoyable. Interestingly enough, the bathroom in the museum are practically tile-free. Several of us thought that was funny, as typically it's a common place for them.
This museum is located outside of the central tourist area of Lisbon but it is worth the trip if you are interested in decorative arts. The museum is housed in a former monastery, the remains of which becomes an important part of the museum experience. The museum presents the history of tiles in Portugal and has some beautiful pieces.
This museum is a bit out of the way, but it is worth your while to visit. It has a wonderful collection of historic to modern day artful tiles and an exquisite gold encased chapel.
Tucked away in a neighborhood this museum one of a kind.Anyone with a passing interest in tiles will love.
A tile museum sounds boring. This isn't! No metro station nearby so a taxi or bus is required. We used the 794 bus from the city centre and were there in about 10 minutes. Set in an old convent the museum displays tiles dating from around 500 years ago to present day and ends with a panoramic display of Lisbon before the great earthquake. The church attached to the museum is also quite stunning. We spent 2-3 hours visiting with two teenage children without hearing 'we're bored', so can't be bad!
This museum is set in a stunning 16th century convent with a truly amazing church and is full of the most beautiful tiles old and new. It shows the history of tile making and how the designs have changed over time and the different techniques involved to make them. It's a really informative museum full of stunning ancient and modern tiles and with a panoramic landscape of Lisbon pre earthquake completely made out of tiles. We did the free audio guide in English and got a lot more out of the museum doing this.
This museum shows the history of Portuguese tile through the ages. It's a relatively small museum and you need to either take a bus or taxi to get to it. Exquisite tiles!
This museum is unlike any other I have ever seen. An old gilded church where tiles are meticulously restored and reconstructed by hand. Every turn was breathtaking. Tiles from several centuries made me want to tile my whole apartment. Unfortunately, I am renting. There was a movie on the 2nd floor that--though in French--inspired me to visit (and notice the tiles on) several of the metro stations, including Campo Grande. Unfortunately, the salesman in the gift shop was not very patient with my friend, who could not decide quickly enough for his taste between several of the exquisite painted fishes he had on offer. However, we did not let this dampen our experience.
it´s a must . Don´t forget it even if you don´t love tiles ...the best collection in the world So many designs so many colors, at least see some rooms ...
