Best placed castle in the world. Invisible from the rolling hills as you approach it - then you see the top of it and as you near it, it continues to rise above you until you have a creek in your neck looking uo at it on the cliff top. Other highly perched castles can be spotted for miles,
Astounding views of Segovia and the surrounding countryside! As experienced in 2005 the view is very nice from this Mirador ... and Segovia is a city where you want to be in spots where you can let the imagination run wild and this is one of them. It helps you imagine how the city below was thousands of years ago.
It's definitely worth visiting the castle. It's in good condition, the exhibition is interesting and the view is just amazing. It's worth a visit.
The ancient city of Segovia is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets zigzagging past historical buildings and small scenic plazas. Constructed atop a limestone ridge carved by the Clamores and Eresma Rivers, Segovia is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage City. For a different perspective, we exited the labyrinth, descended to the base of the ridge, and followed a wide graded walking path downstream alongside the gently-flowing Clamores River. On the level trail, we passed cavernous limestone outcrops, lush lawns, and thick shade trees still dripping from the overnight rains. When we reached the river’s confluence, under the nose of the ridge, the stately Alcazar stood high above us. The buff colored stone fortification with sky-piercing black slate turrets looked like a great sea-going vessel sailing the Spanish plains. We discovered the most imposing views of the famous castle from a grassy meadow near the village of San Marcos.A five-minute side-trip through San Marcos led us to Iglesia de la Vera Cruz, a dodecagon-shaped church, built in 1208 by the Knights Templar to safeguard a fragment of Christ’s crucifixion cross. After circling the 12-sided Romanesque place of worship, we returned to the walking path, and followed the Eresma River upstream. We crossed the river on an arched stone bridge, and climbed a steep granite stairway passed blood red poppies. After passing through a gate in the old city wall, we again found ourselves lost in the maze of Segovia’s ancient city.
The Mirador is a beautiful view of the Alcazar. It is a different view than what is normally seen and a good walk around the outskirts of the city.
The castle is in good condition, although there has not been a lot of restoration of the rooms after fires, except the beautiful ceilings.Pick up an audio guide as it adds a lot more details to the rooms as you pass through.
Lovely views of the town, the aqueduct and the surrounding countryside...especially when there is snow on the mountains.
This was one of my favorite things to see. I paid 6.50 euro to tour the castle as well as the tower. I also paid an additional 3 euro for the audio device that tells you about the history of the castle and each room as you walk through . On the way in you look over the sides and you can see where the moat was and it is amazing to see how deep it was and how it was constructed! Throughout the castle rooms there are original paintings, stain glass and furnishings as well as armor and weaponry. The audio device tells you about each of these items and it made a big difference! The castle was stunning- really incredible to see. I was a bit disappointed because you see most of it but you do not get to see all of it. For example you do not get to go anywhere upstairs except the tower. I would have like to see more rooms and more furnishings. The walk to the tower requires about 150 steps on a very tight stone circular staircase . It is not for the elderly or those out of shape. It was a tough climb, but once on top the view is stunning . This truly a magnificent site and I enjoyed it very much !
Te trasporta a otras epocas.
