We suggest this as a part of your visit to Chloride. You can get directions from the Visitor Center or just follow the main road until it turns to dirt. Then follow it to the end. Okay for most 2-Wheel drive vehicles if you take care of your speed. This was an old hippie camp back in the day. Pretty spot to view the mountains. With your back to the murals walk about 150 feet to a nice overlook of a dry wash. Also, with your back to the Murals there are petroglyphs slightly to the right in the rocks. The boulder trail that starts at the murals is the southern end of Big Wash Road. Big wash is absolutely 4WD, jeep type vehicle or ATV. This is the worst part of the Big Wash road.Big Wash is a nice 3 to 4 hour, 16 mile trip that goes past mines and Windy Point Camp Ground. Big Wash Road gets better as you pass Windy Point. The road comes out about two miles North on US 93 from where you turned off to go into Chloride. You can get to Windy Point by car from the North End although it is an 8 mile drive and the road gets a little rough.

When we drove into Chloride we had no clue about the murals. Just for the heck of it, we stayed on 125 through town through the residential area after the historic center to see if there was anything else back there. Just as we decided to turn back, I saw a hand-written sign for ‘murals’. We drove down the unpaved dirt road, past a few forked in the road, and followed the arrows and the additional mural signs. After some minutes we felt we’d turn around since there was no saying how far it was and if it would be worth it, and it was almost evening already. However, the next good place to turn around was it, the small parking area. And man, what a surprise, was that ever worth it! Intriguing and highly symbolic paintings in lurid colors painted on a set of rocks! It was amazing and fascinating, and we were so glad we had found this unexpected treasure! Wow! A jaw-dropper when you don’t know what to expect.

Not being an artist I wander what inspires someone to take on a project like this one. The first time we were here the paintings were old and faded but the last time we went they had been repainted and looked great. There are also petroglyphs on the rocks there too.

OK this is not the petroglyphs of the American indians, but more like colorful "hippy" art from the 1960's. It takes a 4 wheeled drive to get there. . . the adventure and experience makes quite the travel story. Be sure to take water with you and be sure you have all you need in case of emergency. . . you are in the wilderness! FUN! But only for the adventurous!
