Very nice stop on RT 66 full of gift shops, restrants, bars and burrows watch your step less lhen 1 HR from Launghlin NV. one of the best things was geting there we drove up RT 66 from Kingman AZ. A winding road thru the mountains take the drive on 66 not the highway if coming from Kingman or go on to Kingman if coming from the other way that part of 66 is something to be seen.
I can't remember when we have enjoyed ourselves more and we have told everyone we know that this venture off the main road is a must! It's an old mining town and when the miners left, years back, the burrows were left.......at least that's the story we were told. Of course these little guys produced off-spring and we must have counted twenty-five to thirty just wondering around Main Street. They say they are wild but you can pet them and if you purchase a bag of marshmallow sized alfalfa cubes, they know it and they get right in your space to beg for food. I put the brown bag in my travel purse and one must have seen it as I felt something tugging on it. There was an old fashioned staged gun fight in the middle of the street and the burrows just wondered around while it was going on, right through the crowd of people. A couple of young ones even got into a sparing match and really went at it! People are friendly and there's lots to see. Great place for taking pictures.
The donkeys own the street - they are friendly - just watch where you walk. Many shops for browsing and buying. Old west shoot out is free and entertaining. Fun place to go.
The old mining town of Oatman sits along Route 66 between Kingman, AZ, and Needles, CA, and it has become quite the little tourist attraction. The days of pulling millions of dollars of gold out of the hills may be gone, but now the shop keepers pull tons of money out of tourists looking for a taste of the Old West. There are a lot of great little shops up and down the short main drag that deserve perusal. Also, many of the stores have created their own unique ambiance over time. The biggest oddity of the town are all the wild burros that roam the streets looking for a hand-out. Many of them look like they haven't missed a meal. But be careful, they are wild, and they love to poop and pee and procreate whenever they so feel like it.They do a wild west shootout twice a day. The one they do is not very good. It would be nice if the town put a little money together to hire some actors to put on a better show. Right now they are volunteers trying to collect money for some charity I don't remember. A great show would really create some buzz. But even with out that type of show this is a great diversion along Route 66 and anyone who grew up watching Westerns would love this town.
Lovely little western town. Friendly locals. Make sure to interact with the town ambassadors (donkeys). Scenic drive in and out.
When in Laughlin , do take a day trip to Oatman. This is on historic Route66 and is well worth the drive. Along the way, you can see the wild burros along the road.If you stop you can coax them right up to you.If you don't see them on the road, don't be disappointed as you'll find lots of them in town. You can buy burro food in some of the shops and feed the burros out of your hand, but once you start, they'll be after you for more. Check out the shops and watch the gunfight in the middle of the main street. The traffic even stops for this
This is a town that is a destination if one is in the Laughlin/Bulllhead City/Needles/Havasu or parts close. Plan on spending some time wandering up the old Route 66 streets, there are tons of shops to see, I especially Like Yellowknife's shop, he makes custom native American pieces. The Oatman Hotel room that Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their honeymoon night is open again (was closed for awhile), take the stairs and see where the most famous movie stars of the time spent their night! There are restaurants available. A lot of people think the donkeys that roam the streets are kept in Oatman... wrong!! They are completely wild; they come into town in the mornings and about 5 p.m., when the shops close and tourists leave you may be lucky enough to hear a braying from the hills around Oatman... that would be the call for the herd to leave the town and return to the hills! You can purchase food for the donkeys and get your photo op at the same time. There is a old time shoot-out every day, the hat is passed after the shoot-out, with the proceeds used to support Oatman's upkeep. If you have time, take Old Route 66 up through the mountains, you can see the remnants of miner's shacks and rock house walls along Gold Road (mining resumed a number of years ago, so a lot of the old miner's areas have been filled in with mine tailings, but some are still visible). Horseback riding is available; it's a great way to enjoy the countryside and the Western feel.. the horses are gentle and it is a guided ride. We've been going to Oatman since the 70's, it's still a day trip when we get back to Laughlin and Bullhead! Must see if you are coming west for the first time!
If you are in Arizona near Lake Havasu City or Laughlin, Nevada try to visit Oatman. It is a unique old West town off Route 66. It has lots of cool shops, the famous Oatman Hotel, and a couple of nice restaurants. Oh, and the burros, of course. They are descendants of burros brought in by gold miners from the past. The whole setting is fun to see. They also have staged street gunfights a few times a day. It is dusty, so don't dress up! It is especially fun for kids to see the burros. The burros are not shy, so watch out!
If you like old mining towns or have never been to one and find yourself in the area, Oatman is well worth the short drive from the Bullhead City, Laughlin area. Don't get there too early or all you'll find are the burros roaming the town. Most of the shops, stores and attractions open up between 10 and 10:30am. Watch a gunfight, walk into a mine, visit the old jail, buy a t-shirt, order a buffalo burger for lunch, have a cold one on a hot day, pass the time with a local or two..... this is small town America. Oatman is on the historic Highway 66 and although the population of people is probably outnumbered by the burros, you'll have a fun time visiting here. The people are friendly and the town is very photographic.
Friend advised when travelling from Yuma to Laughlin a little side trip to Oatman is a must. It is a short 13mile drive off the main road.Mules roam free along the historic route 66. The little town is all western. Even watched a gun fight. This is a fun place to stop and really enjoy.
