Navajo member John gave us a great tour of not just a variety of well defined dinosaur tracks but some fossils such as bones and dinosaur eggs too. Easy access - kids will love it!You park and the tracks start 10 feet away. You pay at the end - we gave him $20 and well worth it. You can take all the pictures you want.Watch for large sign going into Tuba City heading north on 160 off of hwy 89 north of Flagstaff.
We spent about 45 minutes here. Locating this place was a challenge: the signage on the highway is handmade and difficult to see. But we're glad we stopped! Our 79-year-old Navajo guide walked us all over the area. She showed us dinosaur tracks, skeletons, fossilized eggs, and more. Fascinating.
About a 40-min drive out the Eastern Entrance to the Grand Canyon.Acres & acres of Dinosaur imprints you can walk around & see. there are Navajo Indians on the site that will give you a free tour. Our 14-yr old was truly amazed to be able to walk out on the field of prints. Many skeletons have been unearthed from the area & are in local museums. While there is no actual fee for the attraction... many of the locals hang out to give guided tours for tips. They are very knowledgeable & carry around water to help highlight the tracks for you. well worth $10-15 tip. Have paid more & gotten less out of some museums.
I had the pleasure of being guided around the site by the nicest lady, Maria. The site is so interesting. There is no charge to see the tracks and no pressure to donated at all, but I felt it was well worth a $15.00 donation. There are also a couple of Native Navajos selling their wares.
It was crazy windy and we did not want to even get out of the car, but one of the guides hanging around for a tip urged us out and he was fantastic. The locals Native Americans handing around the parking lot in hopes of given you a tour for tips were outstanding in their knowledge and guidance. The best dinosaur stuff we have ever seen in our lives and all of it explained in great detail in a private tour for tips. Full dinosaur skeletons, eggs, and soo much more! Better then any dinosaur museum in my life, hands down!
The navajo believe in letting nature be nature which means no preservation efforts. Fun to geek on. Wish there was a scientific written guide. Be prepared to tip for the "free" tour (but take the tour as they're hard to find initially).
This was a quick stop that we saw signs for as we were driving. The Navajo was very nice & informative. We enjoyed the tracks & remains but did question the authenticity of some of the tracks. I think most are legitimate, but know that not all those species were present at the same time. Also the size of one of the tracks seems way too large for the type they claim it to be. However, all in all, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also enjoyed visiting with the vendors selling the jewelry, etc.
I pulled over to see the tracks on my way between Kayenta and Flagstaff, I am so happy I did..great tracks and my guide..a young Navajo teen...was very knowledgeable and invested in showing me all the tracks. I didn't feel pressured to 'make a donation' but he deserved it and I gave him a tip. Only inaccuracy I picked up was that he said the meteor near Winslow destroyed the dinosaurs...that meteor was 50, 000 years ago, way more recent than dinosaur extinction. Added value was grandma who was selling some nice jewelry and I bought 2 Christmas gifts,
going west on hwy 160, just past tuba city, you will find this on the right. only a hand printed sign indicates where to turn. you drive up a dirt road to a shack where Navajo guides wait. there are crafts for sale and the guides take turns. there is no legal requirement to pay for a guide, but this is their only source of income. the rate is negotiable. the majority of the tracks were made by medium/small dinosaurs. the overall impression is of a muddy chicken yard of outsized birds. there are a few larger tracks there as well. with time for pictures, it is only a 30 min experience. if you're interested in dinosaurs, it's a must-see.
great 15 minute side tour when visiting grand canyon national park. The dino tracks are really clear to see, and the guides know which dinos layed which tracks. Fun stuff especially for the little ones.Tips are recommended, the guides are unofficial. They are from the Navajo Nation.
My wife and I saw the sign for Dinosaur tracks on highway 89 while on a trip through Arizona. I quickly turned around and went to the site. I couldv'e stayed there all day looking at the tracks, but then again, I'm really fascinated with this stuff. Our guide Orlando was very cool. There is no entrance fee but it is courtesy to give something for the guide's time and effort.
Don't pass up this unique site. Admittedly it looks a little sketchy from the road signs, but it is the real deal. T-Rex tracks along with many other types of dinos, our young guide Tyler knew them all. Amazing. Tyler told us upfront that the tour was free and he worked for tips. He used a bottle of water to outline the tracks which really made the photos great. His family live with a few miles of the site and the information he provided about the Navajo people was inspiring.
Near Tuba city in Arizona, signposted on the main highway between Tuba and Cameron. We saw a huge signpost and pulled in. A local Navajo offered to guide us. There are dino footprints, dino eggs, a dino claw and a T Rex footprint which is so large you realise that a human would be a minor snack....Worth going if you're into fossils. Just keep an eye out for the sign, you won't miss them.Tour takes about 15 to 20 minutes and the guide we saw just asked for donation / tip.We went in november and the daylight is still v bright, so you might want to think of a way to take good photos before you go.
Great to see dino tracks, tour was awesome. Anyone going through there, definitely need to stop and see this. The family or people who are running this place needs to fight to keep this place their own. We liked the baby dinosaur tracks. Mr & Mrs Nelson Bia
Decided to pull in on our way to the Grand Canyon. This was a memorable experience. The tracks are amazing. Stepping on a truly untouched piece of land where evidence of roaming dinosaurs still exist was fascinating!
