lincoln-herndon law offices state historic site

Be aware this site is undergoing renovation. It was closed when I was in Springfield in August 2014, but we were lucky to have a very thoughtful and dedicated guide come along and give us a special tour. It was very good and I expect it to be great when the renovations are done.

We were able to take a tour of these law offices where Lincoln ACTUALLY WORKED with his partner. Our tour guide was friendly and helpful, and we learned so much! Highly recommend for anyone visiting Springfield!

We visited the site before it was closed for renovation. The lady that showed us the building had so much knowledge of details, it was impressive! It isn't big area and everything was kept (as much as possible) original, including furniture. I am curious to visit again after renovation. It is worth to take time to visit. I will try to add pictures.

When I was in there. It was very good. I enjoy it so much. I learn so much history about this place.

they were remodeling the interior - neat to see the outside but would have liked to have seen more - no mention of when it would reopen. There is a model of it in the Presidential Museum.

It was neat to see Abe's place of employment and there is a plaque telling about the history. Probably will be cool to see when renovation work is complete.

While the building is closed for reconstruction...the surrounding area is filled with various statues of Lincoln, with and without his family. There is much historical value of this small block of buildings, called Lincoln Square. There is a plague on the wall in the center area, that indicates it marks the departure point of the Donner Party leaving on April 15, 1846 for California, as well as Abraham Lincoln traveling the circuit as a lawyer. Always interesting to read those historical markers and plaques, especially if you are chasing down family history. You never know what you'll discover.

The site is currently closed for restoration, so we were unable to get inside, but there is a plaque explaining about the significance of the building.

Nothing to special If you are near by and have an extra hour go for it. If not skip it.There are many more better choices in Springfield to see.

looks like they are getting ready to do some more restorations. but still had a great tour. enjoyed looking out the window where Lincoln would have to see the now old state capital.

This tour guide was very good, but the venue is being redone to be exactly as it was in the day. I was glad that we had visited the Lincoln Museum before we went here so we had seen how Lincoln used to bring his sons here, and they were messy and wild. It was not clear what was originally Lincoln's. I would recommend this tour in any event. It will not take more than 30 minutes.

The offices were very enjoyable, but without a doubt the main attraction was the tour guide. She was super nice and a veritable fount of information. She not only had tons of historical facts about Lincoln and his law practice, but she knew the history of the city of Springfield as well. She took all questions in stride and handled the tour with great grace and knowledge.

The tour is free and very interesting. Since Abraham Lincoln had his law practice in those very rooms it is a "must see" when in Springfield.

Be sure and do the tour. The guide is great and a wealth of information. He told some interesting stories about Lincoln qnd his law cases.

The docent works hard to make this empty area come to life. But getting a sense of place and proximity will appeal to history buffs.
