Visited this the other day, 2/18/2015, and had a fairly interesting tour. At the time we visited we (three of us) were the only visitors there. The price is $5.00 for seniors and children ages 6 to 12. Adults pay $8.00. The price is well worth it. There were no guides or docents on the premises, so we were on our own. They provided us an excellent brochure with detailed information of all the different buildings and other structures in the Settlement. Getting around the grounds was easy. . Aside from the brochure there were little or no information plaques about the various structure. So make sure each member of your party gets a brochure at the time you check-in. At the time we were there we had the feeling that we were walking through a pleasant "ghost town". Take the time to go through all the buildings that are there, and don't miss seeing the 110 year old "tour" boat that use to ply the waters of the St. John's River. You can see the boat to the right as you drive into the Settlement. However you can get a much better view by walking behind the building in which the office is housed. ENJOY!
If you like area history, this is the place to come. Weekend when they have festivals and special events are usually the best times to go.
My family and I went to Barberville on Saturday (Eve before Father's Day) for the "Olde Florida Celebrate" sponsored by MACDeland. The admission was free when we went and apparently you can get in free on certain days too! If you're looking to spend an hour or two, this is the place for you - We learned about farm life, how blacksmiths created forks and fireplace pokers, how brooms were made, etc. We also ate swamp cabbage, lassie cake, baked beans and pulled pork - All of which were delicious. This place is a self-guided tour but it's interactive (such as candlemaking) and shows you just how life was really lived. Sadly, we didn't see the Indian exhibit but it was still nice! Stop on by if you have the time, it's a great fast stop on your travels!
We visited the settlement this past weekend. It was okay. There were some interesting buildings and tools. It was worth the $6 admission price. However,it could be a lot more interesting with some imagination. The country store was pretty bad. There were classrooms demonstrating candle making and weaving. There were a lot of cool artifacts. I went with the impression that it would be similar to Williamsburg, VA. There was no comparison. That is not to say don't visit here...I would recommend it. I also feel that it could be a lot better.
This place is truly a gem. Where else can you find 30 acres of Florida history come alive? Everywhere you turn there's something interesting, educational and engaging for all ages. If you really want to experience Florida, this is the place!
There are many buildings with history inside and it is very inexpensive to visit. Animals, gardens, even an old caboose there. All in all a nice day trip to history.
We enjoyed our half day at the Pioneer Settlement. There is a reasonable entrance fee of $6/adult and $4/child other than those under 5 years old who are free. We came for the music session which is held fairly regularly and enjoyed the experience very much. There are a number of sites of interest. Old barns, equipment, gardens, chickens, peacocks, cats, as well as a little village you can tour on your own or with a guide. We loved the village with its fire station, train station, blacksmithy, church, and bungalows. Inside the main building there are differing rooms set up with various artifacts and items from the schoolhouse. This is a great place to bring children in order to provide some perspective on modern-day life.
