In the winter, the sun sets directly across from the park. There are days of oranges and pinks that are spectacular. The boardwalk wraps along the park and swings out further into the water. There are picnic tables and grills under large oaks, so bring a burger to cook and watch the sunset. Benches are available on the boardwalk. There's a playground for the children with swings and slides. Boaters can launch their boats here and some tie up along the boardwalk. The only negative is that there are homeless people that congregate here at times...Nothing against the homeless but sometimes they are drinking and it makes me uncomfortable. Go at sunset.
There's always something going on at this park, albeit on a small scale. What is most enjoyable is a group of people who comprise the Sunset Drum Circle on Sundays in this Park. They bounce a beat off one another and get some very lively rhythms going. If you play lap drums, congo drums, bongos, tambourines, flute, etc and want to "jam" with a friendly group of people, do come by. On Saturdays at this park, the music of a bagpipe player can be heard wafting through the air as the bagpiper plays to the setting sun out by the water. He will tell you it's a Scottish tradition to play Amazing Grace as the sun meets the horizon. Parties galore; kayaks, canoes, paddle boats and boards--it's all at Shepard Park.
Very small park, but nice to walk around. Bring your camera, especially at sunset. You'll get some good pics of the bridge, marina and boats in the harbor. You can walk on a boardwalk that circles out over the river a little ways. If it's choppy, you'll get wet. Nice for picnics. small boat launch.
