It is beautiful in every season. Great place for hiking, snowshoeing and swimming. Really nice campground too.
This is a nice place to stop during the summer months. You can take an easy hike to the bottom of the gorge right from the visitor's center.Wear your swim suit so you can take a dip in the river during the hot summer days.Dana's by the Gorge is a great place for breakfast and lunch!
I have been to Quechee Gorge several times, but never before had I decided to take the hike down to the bottom of the Gorge. I needed some time to think, and thought the walk would do me good. I asked in the store just before the Gorge Bridge, bought a walking stick and changed clothes, because I was told you could go swimming at the bottom. It was a half mile or so to hike to the bottom, but it was such a great view and was quiet along the way, and nice to meet some friendly fellow hikers with a smile on their faces. The trail was mostly dirt covered in pine needles, and just a little steep on the way down.... the way back up was a different story, and after having gone swimming to cool off, by the time I got back to the top, I could have used another dip because it was a pretty steep climb on the way up... so be careful. They do sell ice cream and other things at the store at the top for those who need it, and of course a store full of souvenirs. Something for everyone, I guess, but there were lots of smiles. I did see small children hiking the trail up, so I think most could do it, but that is why I bought the walking stick. I am told the hike to the other end (to the right of the store) was not near as nice. Hiking down, could hear the roar of the water as it cascaded over rocks and around bends and that was nice to get lost from the world for a bit; and things certainly got drowned out. Once at the bottom, I was amazed at how many people were actually swimming in the Gorge, having a picnic on the rocks, taking pictures and just enjoying the day. You definitely don't see that from the top. After listening to a little girl, I actually decided to go in, where it "wasn't too deep",and maybe it wasn't, but it sure was C _O _ L_D! The current was also extremely strong and deceiving. The river after powering its way down the Gorge, empties into this huge pool that looked calm and peaceful... but again, looks can be deceiving. It wasn't long after going in the water, that I lay back to float on my back, and before I knew it, I was about ready to go over a small set of falls!. A little scary, but it definitely reminded me of the power of Mother Nature. I grabbed onto a rock before going over, and then had to figure out a way to get back up against the current. That was the tough part. Lost my bathing suit in the effort, but fortunately no one made a big deal of things. It is Vermont after all, as one person at the water's edge reminded me. Glad that I had clothes to change into, but there were those few moments coming out of the water when I saw a bunch of cell phones pointed at me! Fortunately, others had the same experience, so it must be fairly common place by those who get deceived by the seemingly calm waters, so be forewarned. All in all, it was worth the trip. Not a bad hike, a beautiful view, and a little adventure. You could just stop at the top for a picture, but me, I would suggest taking the trip to the bottom. It is kind of like seeing the Grand Canyon and not hiking down into it. It is till beautiful, but there is so much more to it.
This is known as the Grand Canyon of Vermont. However, if you have seen the real thing, there is no comparison. Worth a visit, if you are in the area, especially if you take the time to hike down to the bottom. But watch the markers on the trees carefully, as it is easy to miss a turn-off.I often come here for short walks with my dog, but I usually approach the gorge from the trail opposite the Inn at Marshland Farm. There are some great views of the waterfall over the dam from here. And in the summer months, wild flowers on both sides of the pathway. Just a little bit of heaven on a warm sunny day, during the summer, but it is also worthwhile at other times of the year, except for mud reason!Great for bird-watching too! I have seen heron and red-winged blackbirds here
We've hiked down in to the gorge a number of times with friends and family. One should be in at least average shape. Even in the summer, the river is very cold but a lot of fun. Views from the bridge are marvelous.
Beautiful walk across the snow covered field. Good winter walking gear a must. Bring your camera, you never know what nature has in store
This stunning place with its gorgeous views and wonderful photo ops, is worth every minute you spend to drive here. I only wish I were close enough to visit each season! I was there early summer and it was fabulous! Take your camera and allow time.
Even though the trail is somewhat slick and slippery in the winter, this is a beautiful gorge! With the snow-covered trees, ice-sculpted river below and fresh air, what a beautiful stop along the way.Take some good hiking boots. If you have snowshoes, all the better! Best view is from the bridge that can be accessed from the road. (Don't even need to walk the trail if you don't want to or have the time.)
Vermont has always been one of my favorite get aways. This is one of those places that has to be experienced. Especially if you love nature.
A must scenic see in the area but the view is literally off a fairly busy road with traffic. with snow/ice piled up on the sides there was little to no room to stand on the shoulders and nothing to hold on to. be careful, watch for cars and good luck keeping your balance trying to take pictures!!
The walk and gorge are awesome. Bring your swim suits as the swimming in the pools is fun. It is old fashion swimming pond fun. Rocks critters and no life guards. Pack a lunch and enjoy the stay. Something to be hold
Actually, this is just a pleasant scramble down a well-worn trail with some interesting geology and plant life. Can be done within an hour and a nice break from driving. I suspect that it could get very crowded if you are there at the wrong time but we picked a very grey day close to sunset and it was a reasonable stroll.
Stunning gorge! :) There is plenty of parking and good sidewalks around the bridge. There aren't good sidewalks from the parking to the bridge, strangely. There are also some nice, easy paths along the river.
In foliage season the view of the gorge is spectacular bu tdon't just take photos walk to the bottom of the gorge. It's a lovely walk and an enjyable way to enjoy this special place.
We hiked to the bottom of the gorge and were impressed with the beautiful views. Also walked across the bridge to see it from above.
