While my wife and I were visiting the Kirtland, Ohio area we went to several historic sites which were of significance to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the 1830s. While we were at the Historic Kirtland Visitors' Center we learned that free tours were offered at the John Johnson Home. This home is located in Hiram, Ohio which is about an hour drive on scenic, rural roads from Kirtland surrounded by beautiful farmland and orchards. After the home had been lived in for more than 100 years it was immaculately restored, decorated, and furnished to closely reflect its original state. During our guided tour we learned that the Johnsons welcomed Joseph Smith and his family to live with them in their home. The Smiths accepted the offer and stayed for about one year. We gained an appreciation for the industry, generosity, and faith of the Johnsons, Smiths, and others who lived in this area. The home is open Monday through Saturday 9 AM - dusk, and Sunday 11:30 AM - dusk. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. We loved our winter visit, and as a bonus we were the only ones touring the home when we stopped in. Clean restrooms are available on-site.The tour includes viewing the upstairs of the home which does require ascending/descending a stairwell. If you are unable to manage stairs, touring the main level is certainly worth your time. Guests are encouraged to ask questions and photography is permitted.
