I was interested in seeing their exhibits of steelmaking equipment but their site was closed when I visited on a Saturday in May 2013. A few days later I called the phone number on the gate--330-272-4089--and the gentleman said they are usually open from 10 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday but to call ahead to verify.
This is supposed to be one of the few attractions in Youngstown, OH. I really tried to find it, but both my car GPS (Toyota) and my Garmin (portable) would just lead me to an empty field in a apparently abandoned neighborhood. I am not sure if I should blame the park, the GPSs, or myself. Hope other travelers will be luckier than me...
Be warned, the sheer magnitude of the Tod Engine Heritage Park is hard to grasp. The tonnage in this collection alone would make other collections seem minute. We're not talking about a museums photo collection, diorama and a couple of hand tools, but real artifacts, everything here has been collected from local mills around Youngstown before they met their demise. Rick Rowlands is the man you want to talk to; he will show you around and if you have any questions about an item he will gladly give you an interpretation of where the item would fit in a steel mill setting. His knowledge is impeccable to say the least, and he knows all things steel related throughout the Valley. Stop on by and pay a visit, you'll be glad you did!
