Is a beautiful drive to explore the beauty of Hells Canyon. There is a variety of scenery; landscapes, and animals. Be sure to take a picnic and enjoy the sites. Take own water to drink.Be sure to travel to the dam to really feel the impact of the canyon.
A beautiful, quiet scenic drive which ends at the Dam. Well maintained, wide paved road offering stunning views over the canyon. At the dam end of the canyon there was a rest room but no other facilities. We enjoyed the drive in and had our picnic lunch at the river edge. If you happen to be in the area it is well worth a visit but I wouldn't make a detour just for this.
About 80 miles round trip from Halfway, the scenery is stunning. The road is numbing so this is better done with a bit less air pressure on a little bit wider tires.
Hell's canyon dam and the snake river are worth the long drive. No place else like it in the U.S. only one road in and out, but it was paved and well-maintained. You can really go to hell and back there.
After reading the promotions, you'd expect that it's a cross between the Grand Canyon and the Sistine Chapel. Yes, it's deep and in some places quite impressive in its geology. It's a long drive through isolated countryside. Take care on a spring trip as it can be accessed only from the south.
Hell's Canyon is special. I drove the Brownlee-Oxbow Highway last week as part of a longer trip to Montana and this was the scenic highlight. Imagine driving along the river-bottom of the Grand Canyon. The desolation is beautiful. I will definitely be returning for a backpacking trip in the near future.
Drive from Lewiston, down the Oregon side of the Snake River towards Enterprise and Joseph. The scenery is excellent and a prelude to Hell's Canyon. The road to the viewpoint is quite narrow and winding but well worth while. From the bottom of the canyon drive downstream to the dam and some spectacular scenery. For adventurous drivers only, there is a steep winding gravel road a few miles upstream from the dam, that takes you out of the gorge, to Council, via Cuprum. The views are amazing, but the road is not for the faint-hearted, although we did it in a medium sized car and had no problems.
happy that it is not that busy, great views, take a boatride! highly recommended, although you should check if your at the north of soutch side, two different areas
Hells Canyon is pretty amazing. The drive to get up to the lookout is as much worth it as the view at the top.
Our favorite place to camp and water ski. Any of the three reservoirs offers great skiing. And the Idaho Power Campgrounds are really clean and well-maintained. Only negative is that the water turns green late in the summer due to the algae from the heat.
