I love cheese! I sampled several cheeses; the staff is great and everything was amazing. If you like spicy, do sample the Dante's Inferno!
We drove a ways out of Salem to visit this cheese factory. This is the real thing! You drive past the cattle barns and sheep in the fields, just relishing the fragrance. Wear your boots, if it's raining. Great selection of cheeses, all made on site. We purchased their cheese several places during our trip through Oregon, but wanted to visit the source, glad we did. I honestly didn't count the number of cheeses the very pleasant clerk offered (he never stopped offering), but we settled on just a few. While we would have been happy with almost all of them, our limited RV refrigerator space required we choose. Our favorite, long gone, was the Perrydale--a sheep and cow milk cheese. We also liked the Boerkasse (which we actually bought earlier at the Mt. Angel Sausage Company). We were able to bring home a French Prairie Brie, a Creamy Havarti (my wife's favorite) and an Aged Raw Cheddar. I only regret not stuffing the Asiago into the refrigerator also. If you're visiting Salem, this should definitely be on your list of stops.
We started a day of wine-tasting at this place, ready at the door when it opened at 10 am. Located on a farm within view of the cows from which the cheese presumably originates, the shop -- as small and remote as it is -- offers an incredible selection of types and flavors of cow milk cheese. Better yet, the salesperson indulged our desire to taste about 75% of an estimated 50 selections available, including goudas, jacks, cheddars, havartis, and brie. Although we knew that they had a day of heat to be unrefrigerated as we toured wineries -- not to mention 7 hours of flying back to Wash, DC -- we took a chance and selected a dozen or so packages from their stocked refrigerator once we determined our favorites from the tasting. As we ate this cheese with our Oregon wine back at home, days later, we were extremely glad that we had stopped at the Willamette Valley Cheese Company and will definitely visit (and buy) again. An unexpected benefit of starting the day with cheese tasting here is to prepare one's stomach and palate for a day of wine tasting!
There's a huge selection of cheeses to try and they're all good! We tried a number of different cheeses (havarti, cheddar, fontina, goudas, jacks ...) and it was tough to decide which to bring home. We settled on the French prairie brie, the aged cheddar and the herbs de Provence havarti; there are a number variations of havarti with herbs, spices and fruit. Be sure to try the raw milk Brendisi. The cheese is made fresh from the cows that line the driveway in. You'll come away with some great cheeses to complement the area's wines. Well worth a visit.
Tiny samples, but, as many varieties as you would like. The cows and sheep are right outside the shop. The cheese is mild and very good. The tasting is free
If you enjoy cheese, be sure to add the Willamette Valley Cheese Company to your wine tasting route. We had 4 wineries planned for our day trip from Salem, and added the cheese company in between our 1st and 2nd stops. What a treat! The family owned and operated business produces some of the tastiest cheeses I've ever sampled. The tasting room attendant was very friendly and encouraged us to try as many cheeses as we wanted (free of charge). The aged Goudas and Pecorino were delicious. After countless samples, we settled on a couple favorites and took them with us to enjoy at the wineries. This stop was the perfect compliment to a day of wine tasting!
See (and taste) the shortest path from cow to cheese. As you pull in, slow down and greet the cows (and Dave the bull). Stop by the tasting room and sample as many of the many of the handmade farmstead cheeses as you like. Many of their cheeses ranked i the world's top 10 in recent competitions. Family run and they really take pride of their cows, cheese and service Yes, you can purchase their cheese throughout the valley, but for a great experience, pack the kids in the car and enjoy the short country drive.
