We went for a drive out here because i had read about it in a ghost town book that i purchased! Thank god that we hired a Jeep because it was a ROUGH road. I took my metal detector but found nothing :(.

Like one said 4 wheel drive is a must! my as was puckered to my seat. I am so grateful a family member from Caliente knows how to drive in these conditions! I am an all out CITY girl as the country folk like to call me lol if I had to do the drive I WOULDNT! When we made it up to the top the view was amazing and seeing the parts of the elementary school that's left and the openings to the mines was cool my hubby and his boys went in just a bit but next time were getting ropes and flashlights and exploring them! good area if u wana shoot some bunnies too! there really isn't anything left to see but its cool to explore. if your there make sure to check out the cemetery before you get up to Delmar. Camp there ova night! its a cool experience real peacefull!

It took us two trips to find Delamar and when they say it is only accessible by 4 wheel drive, THEY MEAN IT. The best way to find Delamar is to have a good GPS. Come from the north and look for the sign, which is very hard to see, off do South Pole Road. Once you get there it is any amazing view and very interesting. Worth the trip.

We visited this ghost town, after reading about it, in September 2004 .. Gold was discovered here in 1889.. As I recall, 3000 people lived here by 1897. Delamar had the distinction, that the gold was found in quartzite, mining and working the ore resulted in dust in the mines and mills. The particles of glass like rock were hazardous to the lungs of those who breathed in the powdered dust. The camp became well known as "The Maker of Widows", for the large numbers of workers who contracted silicosis and suffered premature death from the affliction. Even those who didn't work the mines but just lived there often died from the dreaded dust. On the way to the camp I stopped in Rachel NEVADA, and was informed by the locals there not to go to Delamar, as the dust still remains there and can kill you.. We arrived in Delamar about 2hours later.. As with many Ghost towns in the west that are unprotected, there has been vandalisim and looting of the ruins.. Stone foundations, mill ruins and two cemeteries are all that remain today. Delamar attracts Many a sightseer and photographer, but we were there alone on this day.. There were strong winds in the valley below and we watched dust devils walk across the valley floor.. It is about a 20 minute ride on dirt road from U 93 to the camp, the last mile is very rocky and rough, not for your Cadillac.. A high clearance 4WD machine makes it easy on this rocky mountanside..
