This trail is awesome!! I'm a pretty novice rider and had to walk a few spots, but overall a fun and challenging ride in a gorgeous neck of the woods.. Yuba Expeditions shuttled us up and one of our crew had a flat we couldn't fix half way down and so it took us until after dark to make our way to the end of third divide where the trail hits fire roads. After more hiking in the dark with a phone flashlight app, Andy from Yuba Expeditions was there in his truck having noticed my car was still in the lot after dark and gave us a ride back. Seriously, outstanding looking out for people!! If you are headed here, Yuba Expeditions should be your set point for anything you need. Super impressed with their knowledge of the area and going way beyond what you would expect in keeping a watchful eye..
We rented awesome bikes from Yuba Expeditions and those fabulous bikes did for my mountain biking what shaped skis did for my skiing. I was just a little more awesome. Its a great long ride with challenges for everyone. I feel no shame for walking the parts that looked scary to me. We had the trails after a little rain had tamped down the dust - which I've heard can make it less fun. I've got nothin but good feelings about this ride!
Just rode it this past weekend. Started in Sierra City and rode the climb and downhill back to Downieville. If you are a mountain biker you need to ride these trails - some of the best in the world. If you do not want to climb that much you can catch a shuttle in town for about $20. I flatted a few times so bring tubes!
Came here for a weekend riding trip and was really blown away with the place. Quaint town set along the Yuba river and very MTB centered. Downieville Outfitters has friendly staff that will orient you to the area and offer a great shuttle service to allow for a 2.5 hour downhill ride. Gorgeous views of the Sierras, fantastic downhill riding that's do-able for someone like me with only intermediate technical skills. Don't miss the Yuba river that runs right through the town and has smooth granite boulders great for swimming. One word of caution about facilities- there is a health clinic in town but limited hours to a good first aid kit is a must. Learned this the hard way after a nasty fall.
The operation was very well organized (Downieville Outfitters). The shuttle is the way to go, and the trails are endless.
This is a great bike ride, alot of elevation changes and a challenging course. It only serve on the support team for a friend of mine, I'm to old to give this a try and it is best to be in good condition to attempt this one.
Hold on and acccept that you are going to take a spill
Incredible world-class downhill run with multiple variations. The standard course is Sunnyside, Butcher, Third and First Divide trails and it is 2.5 hours of hair-raising intensity. Just hold on. Also plenty of outstanding trails nearby. Downieville is a great destination and friendly town well worth the drive. Check out Yuba Expeditions for a bike shuttle to the top of the mountain and be sure to reserve a spot in advance. They have demo bikes representing top Santa Cruz and Ibis kits that will ensure the best ride of your life. Yuba is bar none the best bike shop I have ever experienced and they will treat you right. There are three good places to eat in town: the Grubsteak that has good beer on tap, a great porterhouse and chicken fried steak; the La Cochina de Oro which offers great healthy Mex with your beer, and the Two Rivers Cafe which has great pizzas and salads and offers all-you-can eat breakfast for $9 on Saturday and Sundays only. Seriously you can't go wrong with any of the three after a hard day on the trail. And now, the Top 3 things I like about Downieville: 1. No stoplights (people walk down the middle of the street at all hours), 2. Open container (yeah, really), 3. A public bike wash station (with stand).
I have not been to Downieville in 33 years and I am definatley glad I decided to go!! Such a sweet town. THings have definatley changed but if you get a chance check it out!!
one of the best races in the countryhave to add filler to get more words in
Attended the Sunday Final and had a blast. Great event to get out with like-minded folks. Charming town and a fun festival feeling. Plan to go every year.
I scheduled a trip to Downieville to experience the famous Downieville Downhill (mountain bike single track).Even though it was at the end of the season (late October) and an off day (Wednesday), Greg, the proprietor, agreed to take care of me. He came out only for me that day...and I got a great dual shock Specialized Enduro. He even provided a spare tube and repair kit in case I needed it.He shuttled me up to the top of the mountain, which was a 45 minute ride, and went over the trail map with me in detail. As I was alone he offered to come by and see if my car was still in the parking lot in 3 hours, in which case he offered to come up the trail looking for me.How much did all this cost? ONLY $75 for everything! Great service, great bike, great ride. Thanks, Greg.
The Downieville downhill is the perfect combination of both a downhill run and a cross-country expedition. The classic route racking in almost 15 miles, consists of approximately 5,000 feet of vertical descent with just enough elevation in climbing to almost make you wish that you'd left your full DH rig at home. With a mixture of naturally formed spring-fed single track, groomed and free flowing go-as-fast-as-you-feel-comfortable-with forest runs, rocky and technical puzzles for the more experienced rider which is still passable by the entry-level crowd with a short walk, and scenery spanning from the 8,000 foot peaks to the old growth forest, to the shaly canyons overlooking the river below if you can stand to slow your bike down for long enough to look. While you will still find all the trails to be hard-tail friendly, suspension will definately increase the fun factor. Wear your helmet, bring your protective pads and a pair of gloves, know your limits, and carry everything out that you bring in. This will ensure that your new favorite place on earth will remain accessable for many years to come. Once your reach town, there might even be enough time for another run... ...what'd'ya say?
