We stopped here on a whim and are delighted that we did.Dan "the wine man" was very friendly and knowledgeable and he made our tasting visit VERY enjoyable. We can't wait to open the wine we purchased!
We loved the wines, the tasting room was larger than most, there was a nice covered patio and a large back yard to picnic on. They didn't have crackers to cleanse your palate, but rather had an assortment of fine cheeses to enjoy! We were there Labor Day weekend and they had live music as well. This may have been something special for the holiday. In the backyard they also had some emus (fenced in), but they only added to the ambiance. The server was wonderful - lots of personality. The Rose de Grenache was our absolute favorite, and none of us would say we liked "rose". Great Place !!
If you like Sangiovese wines, put Koehler on your itinerary. I'm a big fan of this wine, enjoying the fruity flavor. This is a light red, drinkable on its own or with food. The woman pouring the wine was so friendly, she made us feel at home. The Chardonnay was also delicious, not too heavy for this type of wine; it drank more like a Sauvignon Blanc.
This tasting room was well marked, but far off the road. We found it easily, though and enjoyed ourselves. We had sampled one of their wines the evening before at dinner, so when we saw the vineyard we had to stop. The tasting room was comfortable and the pourer was helpful. We went for a tasting, not for lunch, and truthfully do not expect to purchase lunch at tasting rooms, so I was surprised at some reviews about purchasing food. We either bring a lunch for later in the day, or stop off and pick something up.Here we had good wines to choose from and since the wine we had the evening before was as good the second time we tasted it, we purchased a case to be delivered in the fall.We live in Arizona, temps in the 108 region during the summer. Many of the wineries have a warm club, where your wine club membership is twice a year rather than four times a year to deal with the heat. This winery had no issue with delivery once the weather is cooler. When we placed our order and gave our address we were told the wine would not be delivered until the fall. Which we appreciated In fact we were surprised that there were some vineyards that did not consider this. I would not join a wine club that considered delivery to Arizona in the summer. Who wants their nice case of white wine siting in the UPS ware house and then the UPS truck during delivery day, when the temperatures reach 108 outside. I know the UPS delivery folks are in and out quickly, and trucks are air conditioned, but I do not want to take any chances with my nice bottles of wine. This winery gets it. Our case of wine will come in October. The gentleman pouring our wine and taking our order, also said he would email us prior to shipping to be sure the temperatures were down. This is incredible service!!!!After our wine tasting we walked the grounds and visited the Emus...interesting. Very expressive eyes! I was enchanted by them. My pup, just watched from afar, not sure what these big things were. This was a fun day and great experience.
Loved this place. I was perturbed at the 15.00 tasting fees at other wineries where you don't even get to keep, the glass! Less money here and if you buy enough wine (I did ) you may even get 2. The emus outside come right up to you at the fence, probably the closest you will ever get to one. They make weird sounds.. Back to tasting. Excellent chard and Riesling (not too sweet). Funny wine steward(Dan) makes this entertaining stop. Food is limited (as all wineries) so stop at Paninos in Los Olivos and get a GREAT sandwich on focaccia bread and eat lunch with an emu on the upper patio.
This is a lovely place but don't go unless you only want to taste some wine. I fancied sitting down for a nice light meal. On offer are a few items, which include cold meats which look like food poisoning waiting to happen. It's in a little tin foil tray with a plastic lid which you help yourself to out of the minifridge. It's pretty gross actually. The wine is nice but it's a pop in and pop out kind of place for wine enthusiasts only. Don't go if you want to eat as well.
Very nice. We sat on the patio. It wasn't very busy the day we came since it was a weekday. Gentleman who poured the wine was very nice. It was a little warm that day but the patio was covered so it was nice. Also had a grass area. Nice place to have a picnic. Wine was decent and the gentleman explained the wines.
Very nice tasting and a great Syrah. The wine room manager was friendly and took time to learn what we liked and even poured some wines not on the regular tasting menu. Of course, this was a Monday and a slow time so that he could spend more one on one time with us.
We go to the Los Olivos area wineries frequently but always stop at Koehler Winery where we joined as members because of the consistent quality of the wine and the wonderful hospitality at the tasting room. Dan and staff are knowledgable, warm and just fun. We can only get this wine through the vineyard, not in stores and the price, variety and taste is not to be beat.
If you don't see the sign until it's too late, turn around and go back. The wine is worth it, although at $15.00, the tasting fee is too high. Nicole was a great hostess.
My husband and I really enjoyed our stop at Koehler. We travelled on the Grapeline Wine Tour and out of the 4 wineries, Koehler was our favorite. We loved Dan our pourer who was so comical and knowledgeable all in one. We've been to all those big wineries in Napa & Sonoma, but really seem to be stuffy & rushing. We love the small wineries where the wine is great along with the more personal service! Dan, you are the man! Thanks Koehler & Dan for making our wine trip memorable! We will be back!
I LOVED my experience at Koehler. It is absolutely beautiful and the animals are so fun! I also appreciate that it's a smaller winery. The wine was so great I signed up for the club. Very fairly priced. Dan "the man" was hilarious and a great host... I understand why some people don't understand his sense of humor but I found it refreshing since some wine servers can be so stuffy! Tasting was nice and relaxing... Didn't feel rushed and could enjoy the views.
Koehler Winery is a hidden gem along the Foxen Wine Trail near Los Olivos. I've been coming here for years and love their wines! Great whites as well as reds...setting is intimate, with outdoor tables available for picnics. Dan, The Man, is passionate about wines and could double as a stand up comedian! Dan makes the wine tasting experience very fun!
This was our last stop of the day on a Saturday in January. Like the other wineries we visited, there was a crowd (and this one was a bachelorette party type crowd, i.e., came in a limo, drunker and louder than most). Since they had not arranged their visit ahead of time, the winery folks were not happy about it, and the cat was annoyed with the drunk girl wearing the crown picking him up. But, to their credit, the owner and the cat were both very gracious about it all. My husband and I shared a tasting of their higher end wines. They were pretty average overall, although the most expensive red was very good (but overpriced) and the viognier was a few notches below the other viogniers we'd tasted that day. Our pourer, Jessica, made our day by comping the tasting after overhearing that it was my birthday. I really appreciated that unexpected show of relationship-building and customer service. The best reason to visit this winery is the beautiful setting. We were there just before sunset, and nothing beats the beauty of the late winter sun glowing through the red and orange grape leaves while sheep graze nearby. The emu we saw seemed a little peevish after what must have been a day of annoying drunk people, but interesting to look at nonetheless.
I Have been visiting this winery for about 7 years. The wine is very good especially the Syrahs and Cabs. The grounds are beautiful and plenty of picnic tables to accomodate large groups. The tasting room staff id very friendly, Very nice vibe in the tasting room. There is a $10.00 tasting, free if your a member of the wine club. Two people can easily split one tasting fee.
