I am sitting in New Mexico finishing off a bottle of Gregory Graham Syrah 2009. So yummy. Visited the winery in April. It was so worth the drive. Had a blast with his wonderful labs. He even drove to the house to get them for us. Yes, we are big lab fans. While the dogs were amazing the wine knocked our socks off. If you love big red wines you will love the cab amd syrah.
We found Gregory Graham Winery by chance and thank goodness we did! We are big fans of Rombauer wines near Calistoga and we heard at a wine shop in Upper Lake Ca (Clear Lake area) that the former and recent Rombauer winemaker had started his own winery in Lake County we had to find it. The winery is located adjacent to vine covered hills over-looking Clear Lake that added to the enjoyment of the trip. We tasted about nine different wines and found them all outstanding. Now we have two favorites; Gregory Graham and Rombauer. We joined the wine club and opted to pick up rather than have the wine shipped. We look forward to out trips to Lake County to pick them up.
The winery is actually in Jago Bay midway between Kelseyville and Lower Lake. The view on the road as one turns off the Highway are breath taking. The small tasting room is located in the steel building. Often Rex and Reba will greet you and either Greg or his wife are close by and will conduct the tasting themselves. The Carneros Chardonnay, Viognier, and Submerged Cap Syrah are most memorable! Before opening his own winery, Greg was the winemaker at Rombauer Vineyard in Napa Valley. He knows his craft well! Here is a place to enjoy quaility wines in a homelike atmosphere - something one can rarely find in the Napa Valley!
This place didn't have the opulence and show that is expected with more well known wineries...and it didn't need it! Their wines speak for themselves. We entered through the non-descript back door of a large, modern but plain building, that was obviously put there for purposes other than entertaining Oenophiles.Once inside their spartan and immaculate tasting room, we were treated to some fantastic wines, including the best Pinot Noir we had on the entire trip! The gentleman serving us appeared to be the person in charge( Greg Graham I'm guessing). He spoke about his product with the passion and knowledge that one gets, only by being involved with every level of production, from vine to bottle.I can't believe I'm writing the first review of this place. Gotta stop here if you're in Lower Lake.
