Talk about out of the way. Take 49 from Camino to Placerville, twisty, windy up hill and down...too bad it was raining and i had people in the back seat i didn't want car sick because this would be a fun road. Anyway GPS found them the first time. Setting is in the middle of a vineyard on rolling hills. View was spectacular. We had the wheat beer. It was okay, not bad, not great but defiantly drinkable. As i was DD i couldn't do a full flight sampler so restricted myself to a taste here and there. Our regret was that we didn't bring sandwiches to eat out on the deck overlooking the vineyards. For the adventurous, there is a picnic area down in the vineyard which is about a half mile walk on dirt roads. Nice walk. Staff was friendly enough. For this trip it was our favorite for ambiance and atmosphere. Would hit 'em again.
Great combination of excellent wines, craft beers, and terrific hospitality. Beautiful location for events or just relaxing.
Loved their wine. Purchased a case to have shipped home. We visited many wineries in the area and this was our favorite.
Loved the wine and the atmosphere. They have a beautiful terrace by the wine tasting room, great beer and delicious food for the wine passport weekend.
The food here is consistent and good. Nice greeting from the owner and appreciate the good quality selections from food to wine!
My second visit to Gold Hill in the last year. I went back for the Barbera, Cab, Cab Franc. They have a beautiful property and some great wine for the price. Beer if you want to beer taste as well. Too bad the lady conducting the tasting has no personality and seems to be very unhappy to be there. It does not promote the desire to hang around. She was there on our last visit and we all had the same experience. I may be ordering my wine via phone in the future.
Six stopped for a tasting, three for wine and three for beer. The three of us were thrilled with the wines, the Cab Franc, Barbara & Syrah's were outstanding. We bought bottles to have with dinner that evening, the value for these wines was great, I am going to call and order more this week, we stopped at other area wineries and paid double or more and liked these better. Only downfall was the lady doing the tasting, she was not friendly at all and wanted to argue with me over the one wine ( Primitivo ) that I did not like. None of us thought she should be doing that job which should be customer service and people friendly oriented. We bought the wine anyway and sat outside on the patio with a beautiful view. Choice of 5 tastes for free from there list of whites and reds.
Gold Hill is in "hot" weather wine country, and as such grow grapes suited to that climate. We were pleasantly surprised by a couple of their wines. The nose and finish on their Petite Syrah blew our socks off. And the Barbera was a genuine mouthful. So we bought both. The vineyards are extensive, and visible from the deck of the tasting room. Surprisingly, they also brew beers, which we did not taste, but that's for the next time when we go back for Blues N' Brews in August.
They have good beer, a great Malbec & one of the rudest wine pourers I have ever encountered. We were with someone who had never gone wone tasting & the server made her feel like an idiot. We will never go back there.
We tasted EVERY wine and loved them all! Debbie was very helpful in understanding the local wines and how they are produced and what separates Gold Hill from the rest!
My family went up to Gold Hill around the time of the harvest. It is such a beautiful time of year and watching the grape picking and colors of the foliage was just such a treat. My husband and I enjoyed a glass of wine on the deck while our boys walked down to the pond below. They enjoyed all the places to explore as we all walked around later. I read some of the other reviews about bad service and I think management has changed. The service was great and the GM came out when we were there and shared some fun stories about Gold Hill. We will definitely make this a regular destination.
The wine's good, but we go for the beer and the fantastic view. They sell items from a variety of local vendors, too, that we don't find at other wineries.
We toured Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park (we rated it a 4 with a well done visitor center) with our picnic lunch in tow. There are many, many picnic tables at the Park situated in very nice shaded areas. There is one picnic area called Beer Garden but there is no beer! So we asked in the visitor's center where to find a beer. The suggestion was Gold Hill Vineyard! So 2 miles later we pulled into Gold Hill, found the tasting room and proceeded to "taste". We shared the 5 glass locally brewed sampler of ales for $7.50 (Old Miners Scoth Ale ranked highest). We sat on the deck and enjoyed overlooking this wineries beautifully situated vineyards. Although the deck tables with orange backed plastic chairs could be improved upon! We also sampled their BBQ sauces and jalapeno preserves which were very tasty. The Mrs bought a tin of their zinfandel chocolates. The winery features red wines which we prefer. There is no tasting fee for at least 8 wines. We, as custom dictates, started at the top of the list and worked our way down. When we reached the 2008 Malbec, I felt it was one of the best wines I have ever tasted. As we reached the conclusion, our consensus was wow, we really like these wines. So we joined the wine club which requires 3 quarterly shipments or an agreed to $50 cancellation fee. "Hopefully" we will enjoy are future shipments as much as we enjoyed them at the winery. We bought a bottle of the Malbec, grabbed our picnic foods from the car and walked a short distance down the road towards Lower Pond. There on a knoll are 4 semi-private picnic tables. We had our choice, so our view was directly out over the vineyards with the spellbinding California foothills and their mighty oaks as a backdrop. The table area is manicured with a lawn and a variety of native California flowers, ground covers and lavenders. Being long time Californians and lovers of "fine" picnics, this "dining" experience was just fabulous. Joie de vivre!
Our family just attended the Mother's Day Brunch at the Gold Hill Vineyard. Food didn't start for forty minutes; they ran out of half the items and said "we didn’t plan on having that stuff anyway". The lady serving the three main items said that they were heating more veggie quiche so I went back to the table figuring I could return and when I did was turned away by the server because four people hadn't shown up yet. I then returned after the four latecomers were served and was told that it was a buffet not an all you can eat. Our whole table decided to complain to the hostess since she was the only one that seemed nice and didn't have a pissed off attitude. She apologized for the rest of the staff and gave us two more mimosas and then brought me a slice of quiche. On the way to the car we overheard several other groups complaining about the same issues. I left hungry, feeling like I had been ripped off since it was not a fund raising dinner. My family will not be planning any other events there.
Fun and affordable wine and beer tastings in an ideal location off of Route 49. Enjoyed two visits to this lovely vineyard when vacationing nearby. Learned about and tasted local wines, brews and fare. Went home with some goodies and great photos to share with others. Cheers!
