Last weekend I visited the Amador County wineries to pick up my wine club orders. One of the wineries was Villa Toscano just outside of Plymouth in the California Foothills. The winery has a great selection of wine with their zinfandels being my favorite. Try the Old Vine Zins, they are full bodied with a great nose. This day the weather was in the 70's which for early March is incredible. We had reservations at a restaurant in Plymouth but because the weather was so great we decided to eat at the winery. Villa Toscano has a nice bistro at the winery where you can get salads, pizzas, sandwiches and deserts for a good price and you have the option of eating inside when the weather is bad or outside as we did. The grounds are beautiful and great food. Grab a bottle of wine and glasses in the tasting room. The bistro will open the wine for you. Enjoy the setting, friends, food, wine and relax.
There are many wineries to visit in Amador County, but this is a great place to stop for a fun, and delicious, lunch. While staying at The Foxes Inn in Sutter Creek we asked for a recommendation for lunch in the area. The young lady who delivered our breakfast told us to try Villa Toscano Winery for one of the best pizzas ever. We took her advice and are under total agreement. They sell wine by the glass, or bottle, to go with your meal. When we arrived the car lot was full with visitors, and I can understand why. Definately worth a stop.
We had a great lunch @ the winery. It was a beautiful sunny day so sat on the patio with a great bottle of wine to enjoy pasta, grilled veggies, salads and yummy cake from the bakery! Fridays are really busy so go early!
Although the pizzas were very good, the wines were priced too high for what they were, and the tasting room almost felt like a souvenir shop. There is a great view of the barrel cellar from the tasting room, though.
This is a great place to partake in their bistro with a glass of their wine. Absolutely gorgeous outside dining tables. Very large and very commercial but worth a visit around lunch time. Understand it gets very crowded on the weekends.
We really enjoy each visit. We are club members whom are about ready to go back. Its Sunday for our free brunch. Four of us can go for free. Right now I have my wine waiting for me there. Here are just a few of the pluses. Gets us out of town. The drive is perfect for us about fifty minutes.. Great dining. Atmosphere is gracious and peaceful. The wines are just the best part. I always find something new to buy. Tastings are good size. Deserts are decadent. Then I run over to the sister winery. In September my daughter had her birthday party there. She is a cancer survivor so it was a life party as well. Several of us have memberships so we spread it out. There is no better way then to enjoy life then with family, friends, and loved ones drinking a variety of wines..and great dining. Breaking break with those we love in celebration. My spouse who is in this photo and I try to get up during the changing of the seasons.
We were visiting from Ohio, and my aunt and uncle brought us to this winery for tasting and the member's sSaturday lunch. Food was buffet style Italian- pretty dece so if you know a member, take advantage! We tasted about 12 wines at the tasting bar and they were all pretty good, portion size was ok, and attendents were fairly friendly. Nice, spacious tasting room. We also got to do a 5 wine barrel tasting, which was quite a nice touch. Worth a visit if you are in the area!
WE continue to enjoy Toscana's Cant say enough great things ! Alwys great food and comradery with Marta and Dennis as the evening goes on.
We had lunch with friends on the Friday members pasta lunch. It is a fun experience. The wine varies in quality and price. We had a good deal on Pinot Grigio and bought a case.
Tasting room is beautiful. Barrel tasting of futures and great flight variety tasting. Great place to take photos of your group.
I personally think that the wine should sale it's self, not to be obliged to buy with a fee upfront...
The staff was very friendly, and the patio area was nicely done. The wines weren't great and the food from the Bistro was just ok. From the web page, I had the impression the Bistro was a quality food establishment with seating, etc. Not the case. Fortunately it was a beautiful day, and the seating on the patio was lovely. I would not go back or either the food, wine, or grounds. There are many more in the area that are far better.
Stopped in for lunch as we had bees told it was nice. The grounds and large patio area were beautiful. Unfortunately, a large party had arrived before us, and trying to get into the bistro was a nightmare. I was surprised that although this party had a reserved area on the patio, no other arrangements had been made to facilitate serving them in a timely, efficient manner. The food prep folks were pretty worn out by the time we got our sandwiches. Tri-tip and chicken pesto, both of which were delicious!! However, we almost couldn't eat them there were so many "meat bees" in the patio area. We kept having to wave them away from our food and cautiously take a bite to keep from getting stung. We then noticed several bee traps hanging in trees and vines around the patio. Not good!! Better read the directions on those and step up your efforts before someone gets stung and has a real emergency at your facility and you did nothing but hang some traps to fix a dangerous situation. We were so put off by our lunch exercise in bee avoidance, that we did not do any tasting here.
Wine tasting was delightful, including barrel tasting. Bistro has yummy pizza and sandwiches to eat in amazing gardens, which felt just like being in Tuscany, Italy.
What a beautiful place, but after that your not missing much--excepts the your money and a bunch of rude people. They get their wine tasting fee up front, something you experience in Napa. The wines are small pours and way over priced. Do yourself a favor and go to any of the other wineries in the area. . . I love to be ignored!
