This is one of the nicest beaches in California. There is an amazing view of the waves, a nice beach to walk on and a sheltered side to kayak or swim. This is a great place to take some amazing pictures.
I can't believe people surf here. The water is cold, it's rocky, the waves are MONSTROUS! I have nothing but respect for those surfers who do. Coming here was like standing on sacred ground. I loved it.
I lived in Half Moon Bay before Jeff Clark and the Mavericks were famous. I'm always in awe of how big and beautiful the waves are. Just a great place to be!
I have lived in the Bay Area for over 15 years and I just visited Mavericks for the first time today. I always thought it was a long walk out to the beach. It isn't. Parking is a challenge but even if you walk on the road it doesn't take long to get to the beach. It's a great place to take your dogs. There were a lot of dogs frolicking in the water when I was there. One thing to keep in mind is that there are occasional sneaker waves. When I was there my dog got pulled out into the surf by one. During one of the Mavericks surf competitions, a sneaker wave crashed into a bunch of onlookers and reporters.
Great day trip drive along the scenic highway 101 from San Francisco with awesome view and hike to the point. View of Half Moon Bay along the walk is just beautiful. Don't forget to stop at Jeff Clark's Mavericks Surf shop and watch some of the awesome footage of the huge surf. There are a lot of restaurants along the bay to just sit and listen to the sounds of harbor.
Hotel restaurants are not always perfect, but this one is! We had breakfast and dinner here and everything was done perfectly. I highly recommend.
The waves weren't the monsters of legend but were bigger than most California breaks. Mavericks is quite a distance from shore, but we were still able to watch the 15 or 20 surfers riding some decent-sized waves. It also was interesting see how the entries are made to the surf zone. Not what I had thought. The hike out to the point from the parking lot is easy and skirts the bay. Mavericks is a must see even on a regular surf day because of what it is.
I guess we were expecting huge waves as seen on tv but on the day we went there were waves like on any other beach. The walk from the parking lot was pleasant though and we saw several seals close by. The end of the beach is wild and impressive too, with the cliff falling abruptly into the sea.
I never realized that where they surf is way out there past the rocks, and that they take the suffers out there it not close to the shore at all, which was a surprise. I had to ask someone on the beach, and they were kind enough to explain .
What more can be said of one of the legendary surfing destinations in the world? We rented suits at the local surf shop and took some lessons at the famed location. The waves weren't big that day but it was a great experience and highly recommended.
Loved the stories of the biggest wave in the world! The local restaurants are awesome! If you like local beers and seafood you will be very happy!
When we were there, the surf wasn't that huge... but I know they get very large. Not for anyone who can't swim VERY well!!
Our 11 yr old wanted to see Mavericks and was very happy that he had the opportunity. There was not a swell on the day he went but he was thrilled to see the famous spot in person.
Got a few t shirts and sweatshirt. Good price and sweatshirt is really cozy. Right by the docks so we took a walk there also
The town has a lot going for it, good location, nice weather, interesting downtown, good walks, beaches and decent restaurants. What more could you ask for. Really good choice rather than stay in one of the big cities. Glad we came.
