My wife and I caught the Pentatonix acapella group here on Thursday 2/26/15. As others have noted the theater itself is a marvel to see. It harkens back to the grandeur of the twenties, and is very well kept. The sound as noted, is not the greatest, and is one of the places where the theater should spend some money to deaden the echo. It would definitely improve the performances there. My biggest complaint is the way the theater handles its seating. Any ticket Marked GA 1, GA 2 or GA 3 is standing room only, even though the tickets have rows and seat assignments on them. I find that to be rather deceitful and think they should mark the tickets as SRO so that people know it is Standing Room Only.

I had never been to the "Fox Theatre" before. We made the trip down to see "Billy Idol", and what a Theater. The Theater seats 2800, and it has a "Grand" layout. The sound quality was very good. I will not hesitate to see another show at this location. There is some limited "On Street" parking, or there is a "Parking Garage" a couple of blocks away. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) has a station one block away from the Theater. A Great Venue...

What a great venue to see a show! Saw a concert - Hozier - and it was a very good indoor venue. Lent itself well to the quieter songs but if you're in the upper seats it felt weird to be sitting during the rocking songs. Would be a great place to take in a show if you prefer to stay seated. Next time I'll purchase the more expensive ticket to be near the stage if I'm really into the artist. The inside of the theater is almost undescribable it's so beautiful. Check it out on their website, but know pictures can't do it justice.

This is a class venue to see bands at in all regards except one - the sound. However that is a function of the 1920s era design that just isn't designed for killer sound. So depending on where you stand your sound may be way too much of one thing or the other. My recommendation - stay in the middle from the front section back to the mixing desks. Best "seats" in the house if you get there early are in the middle up against the railing on the second tier overlooking the front of stage level. You'll avoid the crush of the "mosh pit", wont get stuck at the sides, and wont have anyone tall to stare at the back of. The floor does slope, but not a huge amount so the 6' plus people who always end up in front of everyone are still a problem :-) Other than the awesome art decco interior the Fox also wins with an amazing number of bars - is it four or six downstairs? I lose count. If you show up early you can also go to the foyer bar and get food from the Rudy's buffet selection and take that in while you wait. There are usually a few tables at the back of the tiers if you're early.Also the entire floor of the Fox is ventilated and it never gets stuffy or smokey (remember this is Tokeland and you will almost always find someone with an ecig consuming something herby). This can mean it will get colder than you expected so a jacket is often advised if you're not at the front jammed in with the sweaty groupies. One time I ended buying the overpriced band merch. just to keep warm!The Fox also has a VIP area towards the back just behind the sound booths. There is usually a dedicated bar for that, and a bunch of tables. They also sometimes run "meet the band" events before the show for some 1 on 1 time. All that is $$ extra of course but it is nice to have options. There is also a dedicated area for wheelchair users so they don't get stuck in the throng or have to deal with all the steps down to the front.I've never actually sat upstairs, they usually have different tickets for that, but I think you can probably make your way upstairs to sit if there are empty seats. YMMV.

Caught a Govt Mule show in this beautiful venue. Wonderful studio theater from the golden days of Hollywood. Acoustics were good.

In a great location. Very close to transportation and easy to find. Staff were well organized and seemed very friendly. Sound was excellent. Over a great venue to see a concert in. Excellent experience. Thanks Fox Theater.

I have now seen 2 shows in the last six months here - Bryan Ferry and Ian Anderson and in both cases the sound was AWEFUL! Much of this I'm sure is due to the building's décor, which, while being truly lovely, are all very hard surfaces so the sound bounces all over the place. Unless you are seeing a very quiet, acoustic performance then I would look to see ANY electric act elsewhere.

The interior architecture of this old "movie palace" has been restored to the original granduar. It is really cool. The Fox has become the "go to" spot for whatever "hard to get tickets for" performance in the SF Bay Area. Located in the hip, trendy Oakland Uptown District, it is very accessable from the19th Street BART station and just ~20 min. from central SF. Lots of nearby restaurants and nightclubs. The Fox is available for corporate events as well.

I love the fox theater! It's so conveniently located near amazing bars and restaurants in the Uptown district of Oakland. The theater is beautifully renovated, and they always have amazing bands and musicians lined up. I've already seen 4 shows here this year and can't wait for the next!

This is a beautiful old theater that seats 2800. It was recently renovated and is gorgeous to look at. The balcony, where we unfortunately had seats, was cramped. If you are taller than 5'4", your knees will hit the seats in front of you. We were fortunate to find seats closer to the stage that were not being used, so we did get to enjoy the show with some legroom. There are two statues on either side of the stage whose eyes glow, even with all the light off. Creepy.

Awesome concert! Can't wait to see them again :) and the Fox Theater was great as always. Friendly staff and bartenders lol.

This grand old movie theater had been in bad shape until a group of Oaklanders got together and raised funds to restore it. Now there are performances, and best of all, The Oakland School for the Arts, which my granddaughter attends. Well done, Fox Friends!

Beautiful restored theater with wonderful acoustics. The beauty is both visual and acoustic. I was hesitant about paying $50 to see one of my favorite bands, but once the show got started, I realized it was money well spent -- an intimate venue with big sound.

Why is there no seating on the main floor? I'm too old and too tired to stand through a performance.

We watched Elbow here and it was a much smaller and intimate venue than we would get to see them at in England. The theatre is an attractive historic building both internally and externally and small enough to get a great view of the stage form anywhere. It is also located in a nice part of Oakland City Centre surrounded by grand old buildings. The theatre is close to two BART stations and easy to get to from San Francisco.
