Beautiful vintage theater inside and out, but needs a bit more in upkeep...worth the $5.00 ticket price before 6:00 p.m. Parked across the street under the freeway. Was very happy with our seats and the excellent movie that we saw...American Sniper...Chris Kyle a true hero!

Tuesday is $5 movies all day -even 3D ones. You can't go wrong. Parking can be difficult but since I live in Oakland I usually ride my bike

This theater is absolutely beautiful with its vintage appeal that would make you imagine, though it is a movie theater, how it was probably like back in the days when people would wear gowns to catch theatrical plays and all that. I was there two days ago, and I was among the people who, upon entering the theater, took some time out to admire the beauty of its design. A lot were even taking pictures of the theater, of course right before the movie started. The movie experience itself is great -- surround sounds and cozy atmosphere, and with discounts on Tuesdays (not sure how long it would last). Surely will be catching more movies here as, thankfully, it's just a few minutes walk from our place too.

I was in town visiting and happen to catch their last showing of Interstellar in 70mm in the main auditorium. OH MY GOD it was beautiful. I have seen the movie again and while I do love the movie, the second viewing at a different theater didnt hold a candle to the experience of seeing it at the Grand Lake.

Great movie experience. Get there early on Friday & Saturday nights for the great Wurlitzer concert in the main theatre.

see whatever is in theater 1 (the big one) and go on saturday night while the organist plays. it's a fantastic theater with a bizarre ladies restroom (there are more stalls around the corner!). go grand lake! give the multiplex a break and support this local theater when you can!

This is a glamorous old timed theatre from the past! You will be amazed and delighted with the interior. All the gold trimming and wood cravings. The grand staircaseIs a slight to behold. Only complaint I have is for ADA, first levelseats only. No modern elevators, only stairs!! This theatre hasa variety of events; concerts, shows , movies and the yearlyChristmas ballet, name escapes me now....senior moment...During special nights, the organ will be play. Come see this uniquetheatre from the past! Bart is right across the street!!

This place has managed to keep it's old world charm and a trip to movies affordable. It's centrally located near lots of local restaurants, bars and other local shops. Saturdays are a challenge though The Farmer's Market is happening and all the nearby restaurants and bars open early, so parking is becomes a challenge, but it's totally worth the trip! The historical architecture of that period is brought to life inside of this theater so go check it out!

My husband and I walked past this theatre many times during our week in Oakland, but we did not go in until close to the end of our trip, as we were too busy doing other things. How silly of us ... this was one of the treasures we found on our vacation. The theatre is absolutely beautiful with gorgeous marble (I think) floors, a grand crystal chandelier, stunningly tall columns ... and inside the theatres is a beautiful piece of history that should only be preserved and cherished ... tapestries on the walls, decorative walls and ceilings, beautiful wall sconces ... just breathtaking. So take a moment, take some time, go on in and enjoy this hidden gem.

It may seem like a small gesture, but my friends wanted to treat me to a movie. We ended up seeing Guardians of the Galaxy and it was a wonderful time. The seats were a bit uncomfortable for the entire duration of the movie, but I had a fantastic time all the same.

This place is amazing!! Such beautiful design and so family friendly. Our kids loved it! This is definitely one of our favorite places. Any movie before 6pm is only $5! DO NOT PARK in the parking lot behind the building we had our window broken and items stolen. Park on the street, even if you have to circle a few times.

The Grand Lake Theater is a must for movie goers. From a by gone era, it grandeur is hard to beat. I'm happy this landmark is still a part of the Oakland scene. It's a great theater for the entire family.

I have been going to the GL Theater for 30 years. It is a classic beauty! The staff is friendly. The updated but preserved decor makes you appreciate the styling flair from the 1930-40'sIt is not high tech with many modern lobby displays but is comfortable with neighborly charm.I especially enjoy the live organist that plays before the main feature on Fridays and Saturdays. And lastly, the owner has great politics and is not afraid to put it on the billboard. Check it out!

The Grand Lake is an Oakland institution. From the famous marquee to the "golden age of movies" theatres, it is a throwback to a time when going to the movies was a big deal, but didn't set you back a week's salary. Well maintained and welcoming, they still have $5.00 matinees while showing a good variety of first-run (and sometimes hard to find) movies. The owner is unabashedly political and fits right into the general community. I simply love this theatre and the fact that it maintains a bygone era in the face of stiff competition from corporate cold and commercial multiplexes.

A grand old lady situated at the top of Lake Merritt it has been lovingly restored to former grandeur while at the same time serving as a multiplex theater. Come see the current releases and take in the politically charged messages on the marque. Only in Oakland. Really, not Berkeley.
