This is a wonderful art gallery to visit while in Sacramento. The old, original building is a piece of art work in itself. We went primarily for the special Toulouse-Lautrec Exhibit but enjoyed browsing through some of the others more than this special one. There are some wonderful works here for you to enjoy. You really need more than one day to take it all in. The cafeteria has a nice selection and pleasant atmosphere for a quick coffee, lunch or just a refreshing break before viewing more art. Go see for yourself!
I first travelled to Paris when I was in college, 40 years ago... The only prints of art that I bought at that time were 3 pictures of TL dancers in their bright red and yellow colors. I hung them in my dorm room! Naturally I was delighted to see that some of these famous pieces of art had come to the Crocker Art Museum. While the exhibit is fairly small, it was still great to share this artist with my husband. While there, we also enjoyed the wonderful Thomas Hill works of California and the amazing ceramics wing of the Museum. Quite honestly, the architecture of this historic building is worth the visit! We got a nice AAA discount at admission.
Very nice art museum, they always have nice exhibitions and the local works are mostly housed in the old Mansion. Very interesting place.
The museum has it all but my very favorite were the California pieces and the grand landscapes of Yosemite. The collection of original pieces in original frames is extensive and you get a sense of how the artist wanted to present the piece which gives a deeper understanding of purpose and place.
I'm glad I didn't wait in line to see the Toulouse-Latrec exhibit when it opened. It was a nice exhibit, and a big production, but not the blockbuster advertised. Our visit was improved by the two small special exhibitions: Rice's wonderful block prints, and Faience pottery & tiles. This combination might be the best the museum has had yet.
People are always surprised at the treasure of an art museum here in Sacramento. Love the traveling exhibits, currently Toulouse-Lautrec. Docents are well informed. Classes offered by wonderful instructors... and I love the gift shop. It's a don't miss!
We are members of the museum and go often unusally to see the temporary exhibits. We are never disappointed. This exhibit takes one back to the Paris of the late 19th century with a reproduction of a cabaret and the wonderful paintings, drawings, posters and programs depicting cafes, the circus, brothels and bars. Part of the exhibit is devoted to portraits of prominent men of the arts during this time period. The other exhibit we found facinating is Of Cottages and Castles. Shown are tiles designed by Julia Morgan to be used in the construction of William Randolph Hearst's, Hearst Castle. Neither exhibit is to be missed!
For years, Sacramento has longed for and even touted that they are a World Class City. I will defer judgement on that topic, but the historic Crocker Art Museum is definitely a world class museum. There is something for everybody, old masterpieces and modern, rotating visiting pieces. I had not been since the new Friedman wing was opened in 2010; beautiful! Nice gift shop and the current Toulouse-Lautrec Paris 1880-1910 La Vie Moderne exhibit is exquisite...NOT to be missed, thru April 26, 2015. Dress warmly, it was cold in there to me (probably to protect the precious art) :-)
Wonderful layout. Great things for children to do and get involved. Beautifully curated exhibits. Just went to the Toulouse-Lautrec Exhibit and can only say that it surpassed my wildest expectations. Everything was designed to enhance the experience and to instruct and inform in a non-threatening way.Love this museum. The museum as a whole is worth the trip.
Thought an hour would do but spent over 2 1/2 and didn't see everything. Lots of quite good paintings. Nicely displayed.
Beautiful home of the Crocker family transformed into a great museum. Located close to Old Sacramento.... walking distance.
The kids' activities and art classes are amazing here. These people know how to engage kids and find projects that everyone will enjoy. Become a member and come to all the great events. Monthly Art Mixes are great date nights! And the food in the café is really good. Love the sweet potato fries and the salads!
As a subscribing member, I am quite enthusiastic about this institution. The permanent collection is a must for anyone who is interested in California history. Other collections include Pacific Island and African artifacts, and a wide array of ceramic and glass art. Always check out the special exhibits, they are quite varied with excellent curatorship.
The folks at the Crocker Art Museum are making an immense contribution to the overall quality as a city that Sacramento is achieving. The displays are elegantly housed and staged with informative detail. With one special event after another the staff "knocks it out of the park" with intriguing presentations. The newly expanded facility is impressive in design and in providing a warmly inviting environment. The staff is superb, the gift shop provides a wonderful stop before leaving the museum, and the onsite restaurant offers pleasant cuisine and a nice location for basking in the climate of the institution. Crocker is truly a "must stop" if you are visiting and a wonderful choice for residents wanting to benefit from a highlight in the city.
Compact, great exhibits - especially early CA paintings depicting gold rush era - what else can I say?.
