the community has spared no expense at building this wonderful park honoring our veterans from every war. If you go, it is at the opposite end of the parking lot from the civic center. You'll want to allow an hour to absorb it all, especially the sculptures.
The park is ever-expanding and is marked by lovely marble and granite commemorative columns in the center of the complex and individual monuments to the various services. A jewel for all veterans.
Very well done and very tasteful. The park has good spacing and a very reflective atmosphere. Like the locality and the way the park is laid out. Like the design for future growth.
Florence Veterans Park is located a minute from I-95 (Exit 160) and I-20, beside the lower parking lot of the Florence Civic Center, and immediately behind the Courtyard by Marriott and Springhill Suites Hotels; it's easiest to find by turning in at the Civic Center, or walking from the back parking lots of those hotels, which is what we did on this visit. The Park is a wonderful tribute to local service members, not to mention POWs and the armed services themselves. There is more than ample parking adjacent to the Park, and the walkways and numerous monuments are wheelchair accessible. It's a quiet place, most beautiful during the spring, and we enjoyed sitting among the monuments, reading the plaques, and contemplating and appreciating the sacrifices made by generations of veterans. The image of a soldier I served with two decades ago, who was later killed in action, brought a tear to my eye.At the crest of the Park are flagpoles displaying our national and state colors, the flags of the armed services and the POW/MIA flag. But we were shocked and disappointed that the US Army, US Air Force and US Coast Guard flags were tattered. That needs to be corrected. Likewise, we were shocked to find that many people apparently use the grass around those flag poles - the area closest to those hotel parking lots - as dog runs, and do not clean up after their pets - lots of landmines, which we find especially disrespectful. We were also disappointed to see that lenses for lights that illuminate those flags at night are cracked or shattered - that's simply abuse - again most disrespectful. Litter throughout the Park also disappointed us - there are trash cans available if people would simply use them.We highly recommend a visit to this park. But please be respectful. Put trash in the trash cans, not on the ground, pick up after your dog and refrain from damaging the facility. We really need to keep this Park worthy of the soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen it honors.
Tucked into the back of a parking lot near the Florence Civic Center is a gem of a Veterans Park. Florence has a long history and pride in their soldiers and you will be amazed at the gorgeous tributes to the many service people throughout the years. In fact, they are acknowledging service dogs as well. This location, near a number of hotels, is also pet friendly for those traveling through. Plenty of trash and poop disposal containers, bags so you can maintain the honor of the tributes by cleaning up after your pet and water fountains. Please take the time to visit.
While staying at a near by Marriott, I got out and did my morning walk and discovered this almost hidden gem in Florence SC. Very interesting little park dedicated to the memory of Local Servicemen. The is a wall where not only the names but etched pictures of the fallen heroes are placed. There is a piece of the 9/11 Pentagon....several different memorial around saluting the great warriors...certainly. Worth some of your time...
What a lovely park. Many memorial plaques & monuments and a lovely garden. We spent a very pleasant 2 hours here wandering from monument to monument.
Located in the parking area of the civic center. Walls with pictures an names of veterans that have passed on or died in service that are from Florence area. Water fall panel with oath of enlistment panels. Different niches for placement of memorials for expansion. Walking trails a paths all around. Purple Heart memorial an P.O.W memorial with one next to it called Home Coming or Coming Home with statue. Getting ready to a the ships bell from WW1 Battleship U.S.S. South Carolina an two Ships anchors one from WW2 Coast Guard Cutter.
We went past this place twice before asking directions; it is very poorly marked. Park behind the Civic Center and on the opposite side of the driveway you will find it....Once there, it is very peaceful. The park is nicely kept and provides an oasis in a busy area.
I was overwhelmed by the beauty of this park. What a great tribute to our service men and women. If your are near here its a must see.
Located just off of the Civic Center parking lot, this was a great find. We enjoyed the area and everything that was put in place to recognize veterans.
