This was probably the place that surprised us most of all on our trip. This monument is just like all of the reviewers say, run by a family, a work in progress, worth the time, etc. When you arrive, go see the short 20 minute video. It tells the about the family and the funding needed to finish the monumental vision. We did not go on the van ride to the base, but probably should have. We were amazed at the beauty in the museum. When you leave, you could buy a rock for a donation. Our daughter really wanted one, so it would have probably been worth the donation! If you head north, to go to Deadwood, you will see some of the most beautiful landscapes ever.
This man, Korczak Ziolkowski, who promissed Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear, to built this memorial, for me he is THE man with the great vision, strong faith, big heart and dreams.Go there and listen the story - amazing!!!!
Well, it's much more worth a visit than Mt. Rushmore. So much history, strong will, determination, effort, work, it's amazing. Also the exhibitions, artwork, native artifacts are well worth the time. Hope that I can see this monument finished during my lifetime. Don't miss the light show after the sun sets. It's powerful.
A beautiful monument and not federally funded so tourism dollar's are an important resource in completing this great undertaking!
I really do not know what to say about why this monument could not be finished. My first time here was with a friend back in August 2001. We were doing a ONE-LAP (almost 7000 miles in 15 days) America road trip at that time. Last summer, I saw with my own eyes that the work was really in progress after 13 years. I said to myself "OMG, I hope it would not take another 13 years to see this monument finished but I am afraid it could take another 6-7 years at least since it is being funded on a voluntary basis without having no official government involvement. I just rated it very good in the hope of it would indeed be a very good monument at the end.
It's amazing what the family has done and the many that contribute. For this memorial. Also other stuff.there museum is very nice. Love to see when the monument is complete of crazy horse.
Not far from Mount Rushmore is another carved mountain side memorial. Crazy Horse Memorial is an in-progress monument honoring Crazy Horse and the Native American People who were very much an important part of American history. The project is not government funded and therefore is only being constructed with the money earned from visitors and donations. The plans are spectacular... with not only the carved Crazy Horse but also a good museum and store, a Native American University and a projected hospital. The memorial is family owned and operated.Though it is incomplete, it is definitely worth a visit to see the progress, contribute to the project and learn about it. One day years later you can visit again and show your kids or grandkids the changes that have taken place since you last visited. If anything, it is worth contributing to the hard work and efforts of the Ziolkowski family.
This is for sure a work in progress. Taking no money from the Government, it's going to take a lifetime to complete, but well worth the visit. Admission fees are reasonable and the history is very interesting. Please visit and make sure you don't rush through. There are so many buildings to check out and enjoy..

I saw this for the first time about 35 years ago. You had to squint and use your imagination to visualize Crazy Horse's head. Wish I'd be able to see it completed, but I (and everyone alive right now) will be long dead and gone before this memorial is completed. You should definitely visit this memorial!
