Love the small beaches, playground and the friendly atmosphere. Great for kids of all age. nice for kayaking and the drive to the place is beautiful.
We drove thru the Rec area to case out a future vacation. The accommodations look great. Camping, lodge, mini cabins etc...it has lots of shade and beach areas. We will definitely be back for some fun in the sun.
This is a beautiful area! There are many outdoor activities to see and do. The drive around the lake is worth it. The day we were there we saw many sailboats out on the water!
Cabins are nice and clean. They aren't huge, but they are nice if you don't have a camper. The cabins are right on the lake. Very nice view. They keep the area very clean, not a lot of litter.
The cabins are set right on the shore of the lake, very nice. They are basic cabins- nothing special. The kitchen was very lacking in serving dishes, sharp knives and silverware. There was one sharp knife. There were no bowls or dishes to use in the microwave or to serve food with. There were only 4 teaspoons and the cabin could sleep 7. We had a good time but the weather was terrible, rainy, cloudy and cool. Hope to come back next year and maybe the weather will be better
Very beautiful setting on the Missouri River. If you have an interest in the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the visitors center offers a very unique perspective as the view is priceless. Great place for a picnic as the area is very well maintained, an opportunity to watch the boaters, and a very close-up look at the Gavin Point Dam. We changed our route from Colorado to Wisconsin as we wanted to see the dam and my wife taught the Lewis and Clark Expedition to her 1st graders. We are glad we made the route change - well worth a stop at the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area.
This is a must visit area for Yankton South Dakota. All kinds of things to do. Places to see and enjoy. Has some really nice camping spots if you are into camping. Also some good tenting sites available.
we were at the recreation area below the dam and it is very shaded and quiet. We reserve a shelter for our reunion and have food catered in and there are all the amenities needed for a large group. There is a lot of playground equipment for kids and very nice restrooms.
A lot of people from the area come here to "go to the beach". The river has been okay for this at times but can be full of various "things"... Jet skiing and sailing are very popular for good reason. The bike trails are some of the best in the state and are very well-kept and mostly (if not completely) smooth. Camping is also very popular. Water has carved the rock on both sides the river, which makes it very pretty. This is a beautiful place to sightsee and can almost make you forget where you are.
So, took a quick day trip from Norfolk, Nebraska up to see the recreation area and Gavins Point Dam. To begin with, it was a great day of sightseeing. Secondly, the recreation area is really beautiful. The people in the area are friendly as were those in Yankton.
Lewis and Clark Recreation Area is an excellent park for camping, cycling, and swimming. Campsites are large, not jam-packed together. There is a fire ring and picnic table at each site, and paved parking spot on most sites. The premium sites along the lake are well worth the extra couple of dollars. South Dakota has the best kept parks in the region and L&C Rec Area is a beautiful and fun example.
We camped at Lewis and Clark in the Gavin's Point area twice this last season and enjoyed it both times. The beach was nice to have during the summer heat. We stayed in mid October also. Both times, the bathrooms were clean and the park was well kept. We like how large the camp sites are so you have plenty of space. This is one of our favorite places to camp.
Spent the day in this area. A very quiet and relaxing time. Enjoyed the dam and a little fishing on the lake. The information center at the damn was very educational and even our teenager enjoyed it and was interested. Staff running the info. center appeared very knowledgeable about the area and was very friendly. Would recommend.
I really enjoyed the swimming beach at Lewis and Clark Rec Area. It is a tad difficult to find but if you look for the small sign labeled swimming beach you will find it. The restrooms are very clean and even include showers.
We cabin camp with my husband's family every year and alternate between southern and northern Nebraska State Parks with furnished cabins. Compared to others, this is our least favorite because: *The cabins are very close to the water which is not a good thing if you have small children *The shower water smells like you are bathing in the lake - very, very strong fish odor *There isn't as much to do compared to other locations. It is definitely for those who love to lounge and fish. The cabins aren't bad and they sleep plenty but the beds are typical camping beds - very firm. The twin bunk mattresses are plastic covered so they are very noisy according to our kids.Overall it is a fine place to stay if you just want to relax. The cabins are furnished (except the soap dispensers were empty so be sure to bring your own) and in reasonable condition. Being waterfront for adults and older children is great. If you don't like to fish, be sure to bring a good book and some activities for the kids.
