I have been a member of the Hickory Museum of Art for many, many years. Their regular art collection is outstanding and well worth the visit. However, it amazes me how they get nationally recognized exhibits from museums and collections around the country. One of my favorites was a giant photographic collection of ground zero at the World Trade Center taken by a world renowned photographer. The pictures were about 6 feet wide and almost made you feel like you were there. From time to time, they have gallery talks by the visiting artists or experts on the particular collection. This is usally accompanied by a very nice reception. The executive director and her staff seem to enjoy their work and have made the Hickory Museum of Art one of the best in the country. I recommend that if you haven't seen it, try it. You'll be back again and again. Oh, by the way, it's free.

The best exhibit I ever saw there was the William Starkweather paintings. The museum is laid out very well and the staff is very educated about their permanent collection.

Although I wish that I had something new to write I don't. The museum is one of the best regional museum that I have seen in the Carolinas. The staff was helpful, it was free, the art interesting, and the layout of the main hall is simply wonderful. The museum offered me more than I thought it would and I am glad that went.

The Hickory Museum of Art has a fine collection and interesting special exhibitions. It features a folk art gallery that presents unique works in a friendly setting. The gift shop is a great placed to find hand-crafted items by area artists.

Love going to see what new items of interest are there. They museum is always featuring something new, so everyone can find something exciting. My favorite exhi b it ever was the quilts!! So amazed by them. And the biggest plus is ..IT'S FREE! Go experience it.

We had a little trouble finding this museum, but it was well worth it. It is in an old school and the interior, from an architectural perspective, is wonderful. It is probably one of the nicest, if not the best, small museums I have ever visited. The fact that they had an exhibit by Wolf Kahn when we were there just added to the experience. also, don't overlook the gift shop. the items are very nice and reasonably priced.we also visited the adjacent science museum, which is well worth it.

One of the best things is the price...and the ever changing exhibits. Some may be a little to much for small children but it is a great place to take visitors to Hickory.

Never expected such an array of art in this tiny town The staff was extremely nice and took the extra step to make sure my visit was memorable.The exhibits change so I'll definitely return.

always enjoy time spent looking at the permanent collection as well as seeing new and visiting art; gallery does a good job with diverse items including folk art and pottery; gallery gift shop has locally made items.

The Catawba County area is blessed to have such a wonderful Museum. HMA offers something for all ages and keeps it interesting. Events are always 1st Class!

I attended a reception and exhibit of the work of Elizabeth Catlett that was hosted through a partnership between the museum and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. What a wonderful event, and I don't just say that because I am a member of the organization. Lise Swensson, the director of the museum, has such an engaging enthusiasm for the arts that it is contagious. The Catlett work was thought provoking, and learning about her life made me want to know more. While there, we toured the rest of the museum, a beautiful structure, and it contained an exceptionally diverse range of visual mediums. The upstairs area appeared to be set up for a concert, which I imagine would be an extremely pleasurable event surrounded by the art and ambiance of the room. Of particular interest to us was the photography exhibit, and we very much enjoyed the photographs as well as the written critiques provided by the judges. Hickory has a true resource in this museum and its director is a true ambassador of the arts.

I've been to the Art Musem many times and always have enjoyed the art, photos and displays..the staff is very nice to talk with, a great place to spend a few hours when your near.. and it's free!

The folk art section is superb and like no other and the gift shop has a variety of gifts from jewelry to art.

Great collections and a fascinating diversity of rotating and guest exhibitions. The quality of collections in this small museum is vastly under-rated and underestimated by many of the people who live here. Worth a side trip if you are in the vicinity. Better yet, make a day of it and visit the Science Center which is in the same facility. There are good restaurants nearby in downtown Hickory or just north of the center in Viewmont. Even though I am a sports fan, I find it comforting that people in Hickory converted a high school gymnasium into a space to display visual art. HMA and CSC are both extremely family friendly.
