Thomasville is in the furniture capital of the world. The Big Duncan Phyfe Chair is an symbol of that. It's a 30 foot tall dining room chair.Do a little research on it and you'll find the history of the chair (hint: this isn't the original chair).
The Big Chair is a unique landmark here from the days when Thomasville was The Chair City and furniture reigned supreme. The chair monument has outlived the jobs. It's neat and in the center of town. Put this one on your scavenger hunts or as a landmark to find places up town. Everyone who has been here more than an hour knows where it is. People get their wedding and prom pics at it. Also, the parking lot across from it is great for train enthusiasts to watch and photograph rail traffic on the busiest rail line in the state. There are some very picturesque sites nearby -including a town sign on the rail line behind it.
This chair is awesome. During a recent road trip which we where running behind schedule, I drove the family by it to see it. They all agreed we would need to stop by when we have time for a photo-op. There are restaurants nearby, try the T-ville diner for some good home cooking and friendly staff.
It's large and in charge! Hey it's a large chair, it's roadside attracition kitsch at its finest. If you are passing through and into this sort of thing take a moment and check it out. We were glad we did.
It is the largest Duncan Phyfe Chair.. its in a weird location and not very conducive to taking photos. But none the less. No false advertising
Went out of our way to see this. It's just a big chair. The town is cute. The gardens around it were also nice.
It is the center attraction in our town!! Nothing special but don't talk it down ! Love our chair been there my whole life its a special thing ¡!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus our town made a chair for Prince William of England when he was a baby
Um, yeah. This is one big chair. While the Charlotte-Douglas airport has its rocking chairs, and well, you probably have your own chairs scattered around the house, you likely don't have anything like this.First, you have the base: Said to be twelve feet tall (I didn't measure it, but it could be), and including a time capsule (I didn't dig into it to look), with an eighteen foot Duncan Phyfe-style chair perched on top, for a total of thirty feet of chair goodness. So who was Duncan Phyfe? Apparently a nineteenth century cabinetmaker. No idea how he got into chairs. He allegedly didn't do anything new, he just interpreted what was already there. Why do they need a really large chair for him in Thomasville? No apparent record that I could find. It must have just seemed like a really good idea.
Its just a big chair in a park. Was kinda hard to find so keep driving until you find it and park near it. It's located on the town hall info office so you can get good parking space there to take pictures. We walked around the strip for a bit but nothing else is really special but now I can say "Did it and done that".
The big chair still stands in this small, friendly town that is known as the furniture capital of the world. It proudly stands on a well manicured lot next to the railroad crossing in the center of town. It symbolizes the area's great heritage of fine furniture making by skilled craftsmen.
I wouldn't make a special trip to see it... The chair is in a little park along the main drag and next to some railroad tracks. I almost missed it as the way I was driving, a big tree blocked my immediate view of it. It sits just down the street from the Depot and there is a neat mural on the building across from the gas station. It would be a bit neater if you could sit in it.
This is what us locals ask people who visit Thomasville. It is what has put T'ville on the map! Thomasville Furniture and the Largest Duncan Phyfe Chair in the center of downtown Thomasville NC sits alongside the railroad tracks and across from the town square clock. In the spring/summer is the best time to take a few quick photos, as the flowers are in full bloom and foundations are running. Nearby is the old train depot and Thomasville Furniture factories. There a few locally owned business on Main St. and as you drive into town it is just another small NC town with fast food, banks and a Walmart. But it is home :)
