Yes, it was common that large families lived in small tract homes like this one in Gary, Indiana. The City of Gary and the Jackson Family have fixed up and fenced in the home. A nice information plaque is inside the fence, which makes the detail on the back side impossible to read. It never seems to be open, yet there are always people from all over the country taking pictures of the home. On street parking is available and is relatively safe during the day.
Likely only of interest to Michael Jackson fans, this is his childhood home he and his siblings and parents lived. When you realise so many people were living in such a tiny house, and that this is his humble beginnings, its pretty cool.
I am from a town near to Gary and I decided to go in my later years to see this house and ... it's a house. Not a museum, not a walk way with memoriesof the king in his hay day leading up to his humble beginnings. A HOUSE! Not to mention the feeling of death and devastation that surrounds you from your car window as you gock at a house while people gock at you from all sides presumably to try and see how many witnesses they're gonna have to take out after they rob you. Do it on a dare, I guess.
If you're spending a few days in Chicago and looking to make a trek to Michigan for a little jaunt as I was, then this is totally worth the stop. It's right off the main highway, so it's a harmless visit. I found out from a local who was showing some friends around that there are talks to turn the house into a mini museum, but the typical small-town bureaucracy has slowed down that process. Regardless, in the meanwhile it is just cool just to see the house, imagine 11 people crammed in there, and give you an excuse to sing the "Gary Indiana" song from "Music Man" (if you happen to know that). Oh, and on the record, the street was named "Jackson Street" before the family moved there (you'll notice all the streets in the area are named afterpresidents). Other than cleaning up the property the town hasn't apparently done anything else to memorialize the family.
Its amazing at how small the house was where so much talent came from as well as so much pain. Its sad to see how Gary Indiana has become so poverty stricken. This is an amazing place to see, but don't visit after dark.
I was more interested in the obvious disastrous consequences of the collapse of industry in the area. Ghost town. While I probably wouldn't drive around at night with my kids in the car, it wasn't as scary as others say. It was just a real sad example of poverty in the rust belt. The Jackson home was easy to find and is kept very nice. It only took us ten minutes off the highway to make the stop and we are glad we did.
A very small house for all the kids to be raised in. Tough neighborhood but the house looked great. Just a unique place to visit and to say you been there. The town of Gary is a mess and it's hard to believe that this is where the Jackson's got their start.
It's odd to see this house and associate it with the Jacksons. Very humble beginnings in a city that seems left behind. Vert small home that is not open to visitors.
Have you ever faced death? If not, go visit Michael Jackson's boyhood home in Gary Indiana.First off, I suggest visiting this place in a really old rusted car. This will keep the eyes off of you. After taking the Grant St exit off I80, you will drive through the roughest city in America. This is exactly like just like the movie "judgement night". You will fear for your life. You will see a lot of boarded up homes, and people congregating in the streets who are sizing you up for robbery/criminal activity. I suggest keeping a 9mm with you in your car. Also, the streets of Gary are riddled with potholes, be ready to dodge them because you sure will not want a flat tire there!Once you get to the house, you can't really do much there. There is an abandoned school behind the Jackson home which looks like a bomb exploded and now is used as a concentration camp. I do not recommend this excursion for the faint of heart but it is one of those things that is very memorable and I am very happy I decided to see the home.
After hearing from a Chicagoan that Gary,Indiana was a forlorn, crime-ridden city I was very hesitant in visiting as a solo traveler. The "town" was pretty boarded up and my GPS took me down the wrong street. I was about to give in to that inner voice to give up, but was determined to find it - and I did! Prettiest house on the block and a memoral set up by the private owners - an invitation to get out of my car and snap a few "bragging rights" photos for my social media from outside the fenced yard.
You can't go into this house - but it's not like that matters. If you're a Michael fan like me, you'll just stand there in awe, wondering how so much magic can come from such humble beginnings. It will make you grateful for what you have. Gary, Indiana is slightly terrifying. We actually saw a teenager leaving his house with a pistol in his hand about six houses down. They buildings on the main road are full of graffiti, the windows are destroyed, it looks like armageddon. Seriously. But Michael Jackson came from here. If he could do it - what excuse could I, or anyone else, possibly have for not living out our dreams. That's what our family took from this place. The house is adorable, with a manicured lawn, iron gate, rosebushes, and granite monument. The two houses on either side are also well-kept, but as you move from the epicenter of the home, things get progressively worse. Houses are in disrepair, we saw the kid with the gun, there was a car that continued to circle the block, and we didn't feel safe being there alone, so left soon after the other tourists did. But I'm glad we went.Bring a sharpie to sign your name to the tribute sign placed specifically for fans.
If you are headed along I94 in or out of Chicago, take five or ten minutes to pull off the interstate and see this small piece of music history. It's amazing how much talent came out of such a small house. Snap a few pictures and pay your respects to the King of Pop. Sign the guest board if you wish. Not much else to do. Overall: Make a quick stop, it's worth it.
Seeing the home of Michael Jackson is a very surreal experience it's hard to believe all those brother and sisters lived in such a small house it is a historic site !!!
I don't have a whole lot to say, I grew up in Gary and know the area very well! My advice would be to go in as a group don't bring any valuables! Its a nice memorial for all to enjoy!
I grew up in Gary Indiana not far from that house and trust me--do not go to visit Gary Indiana unless you have been to every ghetto in the world and just cannot get enough of Ghetto tourism. There is not one redeeming thing about Gary. It used to have some great people but they all moved out.
