We were staying at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino and decided to wander on down the street to check out the Reitz Home. We arrived at the Carriage House (where the tour starts) on an early March cold and rainy morning, which meant we were the only two people taking the tour. That was great! Paid the fee, watched a 10-minute video, and then went into the house. And man, oh man, what a nice house it is. Granted....it is Evansville, not those 50-acre estates you can tour in Savannah, Georgia, or wherever, but it was filled with eye-candy, and our tour guide was fabulous. She gave an excellent tour, and it was a very enjoyable 1-1/2 hours. If you want a brief distraction from whatever you're doing if you're visiting Evansville, it's close, and well worth the time if you love decked-out historic home tours.

The former home of Evansville's rich and famous. The home has been beautifully restored and is magnificent. It depicts the glamour and style of architectural beauty and design. It is beautifully furnished and has a story to be told.

Like most historic period homes, this one takes you back to another era. This one, however, has the benefit of an informative video introduction in the carriage house and a very rich history. Not only does it show the original home but changes thru the years. The jewel-like stained glass and multiple parquet floor designs are impressive. The guides were very knowledgeable, welcomed questions, and shared their impressions of the family home. The tour took about and hour but the time flew by.

A trip back in time! For those who love period homes and furnishings, this is a must see. The lady who conducted our tour was very knowledgable and witty. Do not miss this! We saw it decorated for Christmas, but I recommend seeing it at anytime.

The place was brimming with history. Docents very well trained. You really get a feel of what life in Evansville was like in the late 1800s.

Visited the home in early November, just missed the Christmas decorations :( was so impressed with this tour! Guide was very through and showed us every single room as well as telling us the history behind all the rooms. Highly recommend if you love old home tours, it's one of the best we've done so far and you can't beat the price

As a professional tour director we have had the pleasure to tour many mansions all over the United States. I can assure you that this story and home was among the best I've ever been too.Our guides were Duane and Jackie and both did a marvelous presentation of the Reitz Family history. The price is so reasonable for what the tour entails. Be sure to watch the short video presentation before touring the home. My group loved it!

Our group of seven adults toured the home on September 5 with Jackie as our very knowledgeable guide. The home is absolutely beautiful and Jackie made the tour even more enjoyable as she really seemed to enjoy sharing her knowledge with us. The home has been very well preserved with a lot of original pieces of furniture and portraits. The inlaid wooden floors (each room a different pattern) and the stained glass windows are spectacular. We even got to visit the carriage house and see where the horses lived.A very enjoyable tour and education regarding the home.

Take a tour of an outstanding home preserved in the Victorian era. The lumber baron, John Augustus Reitz, decorated the home with the best of the best for those times.

Finding this small museum in the downtown area, I felt really blessed. This Home Museum is sooo beautiful! It is well-preserved, quaint, and rich in history.Everyone should take a tour inside the house. It's like travelling into the past!

This house was built sparing no expense. It had all the modern conveniences of the day. The gilded hallway is stunning. Notice the mercury-filled door handles. The floor of every room is a different pattern of wood inlay. The ceilings are 14 feet high! Everything about the house was lovely. The tour guides were knowledgeable enough to give a great tour, but not enough to answer out questions. To protect the furnishings, no photography is allowed. Don't miss this house if you're in Evansville.

This mansion is just beautiful and our guide was very knowledgeable about it's history and all of the items displayed. Packed full of history about the family and Evansville as well. The only down-side was the cost - $14 per person.

What a piece of local history! So glad this has been preserved. Many, many years ago I served as a docent for tours. I especially enjoy the tours during the holidays as the home is decorated beautifully. Please visit if in the area, or attend an event in the Carriage House!

Done and out in two hours, and you can get on with your life after throwing the required birthday party for your little tike and his/her little friends! He/she is too young to remember, anyway!

This home is very extravagant for the time period, but the way it is presented is extremely pretentious. The tour starts off by showing a video of a man who lived in the house. The old man was extraordinarily snobby. The house itself is amazing the word work and extravagance was amazing to say the least.
