This little sod house was built by the Marysville Kiwanis club to replicate what domiciles were common on the Prairie a hundred and fifty years ago. The house is well maintained and open to visitors all the time during the summer. Parking is only feet away and the site is well situated and easily accessible in a tree-covered city park. A public restroom is very closeby. There is are also a historic schoolhouse, railroad depot, and steam locomotive nearby.
Ok here I and my husband had a huge issue. Yes it is made of Sod but that was about all that even related to it being a Sod house. For one it has wooden window frames, wooden door/frame, wooden roof with shingles...also the inside has wooden walls and the furniture is from a more modern time period not that during which the Sod houses were built. During the time period that this house is supposed to represent they did not have wood to use to build their houses...the entire house & roof was made from sod with windows/doors cut out. It was not a Sod with wood house.
It is a Self toured Sod house. It is authentic and it is an important part of our Prairie Heritage; however, it's still just a sod home.
