Friendly people who opens up the church for us to look at the famous Tiffany windows and gives us a brief history. It is only one block from the Capitol so go and take a look at this stunning beautiful windows.
Lived in KS for 30+ years but knew nothing about these windows until Trip Advisor. Absolutely exquisite Lewis Tiffany windows even on a cloudy day. Worth millions but can be seen for free! Enter through the Church Office on the north side facing 8th street. Helpful, knowledgable staff. Will return on a sunny morning with a camera and tripod.
Please stop for a visit during weekday work hours to see (and take a tour) of the Tiffany Windows...you will not be disappointed!
My whole family came from MD to KS for a wedding here. The stained glass was certainly a sight to see. Everything was wonderful and the Bride and Groom really did not have to decorate because the church itself was amazing. The Organ sounded wonderful, and the service was great. Overall a great sight to feast your eyes on!
These gorgeous windows (favrile glass, not stained) were designed by Louis Tiffany and installed in the church in 1911. The depth, detail, and richness of color must be seen to be believed. We were shown into the sanctuary by a lay minister who gave us a brief history of the windows, and then left us to enjoy them for as long as we wished. We were also encouraged to go into the small chapel and see the Jacoby stained glass windows there. Funny story: I told the lay minister that my appreciation for Tiffany windows goes back to the many times I've seen the Tiffany windows in the First Presbyterian church in Springfield, IL. He was skeptical, and kept insisting that the Topeka church is the only church in the Midwest that has pre-war Tiffany windows. It isn't. But the windows are beautiful, and I highly recommend seeing them.
The Presbyterian church across the street from the State Capitol building is the proud owner of 10 Tiffany windows. We went to the church office and asked to see them. We were escorted into the church sanctuary, given some basic information and left to explore on our own. We were not only permitted, but encouraged to actually touch the glass and experience the depth of the artwork. Beautiful!
Chills went up and down my spine when I stepped into the sanctuary of the Presbyterian Church! Oh goodness, those windows are breath-taking! I took 33 pictures while I was there and no one will ever know just how spectacular they are unless they see them in person! You have to go and see the Tiffany Windows! This is a MUST SEE!!
Highly recommend visiting the sanctuary to see the Tiffany windows. They are beautiful! Also visit the chapel to see some more stained glass windows (not by Tiffany). Hallmark used one of the chapel window designs for a Christmas card. Pick up a free booklet explaining the window designs. There is no admission fee and the church is open during business hours M-F. This church is across the street from the State Capitol.
The L.C. Tiffany windows are absolutely amazing. A free visit M-F business hours. Tiffany was in Topeka to oversee the project one hundred years ago. A rare, beautiful thing to see up close and personal. Worth the trip!
This lovely, historical church is a place of beauty and worship. 1st Pres has an outstanding musical program and their choir is unmatched, especially for a city the size of Topeka. This church is one of the few in the nation with all Tiffany windows through-out the sanctuary. Separate tours are available & well worth it as these windows are absolutely spectacular. In addition, this church has one of the largest multi-rank organs found outside of a concert hall. Plus a caring congregation & programs for all ages make this a good destination for anyone looking for a new church home.
The stained glass is beautiful and its right across the street from the Capital so its easy to find and walk to. The scenes are well depicted and as the light changes the colors change almost coming alive.
This is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot during my travels. The stained glass was done by Louis Comfort Tiffany and is stunning. Even the more traditional stained glass in the chappel is some of the best I've seen. Nice brochure avilable to enhance your visit.
I am a beginning stained glass student and was interested in seeing the windows designed and made by Tiffany. These windows are located in a church that is open to the public. Upon signing in, the congenial receptionist took us into the sanctuary and gave us a brief but very detailed and interesting history of the windows. We were then left to enjoy them as long as we wanted. They were magnificent. You were able to touch the glass to see how the 3D areas allowed for a more realistic scene. Very impressive. Most people only know about Tiffany for his lamp shades, but this was his real passion!
I absolutely loved touring the capital and visit often to look at the frescoes and architecture when I need inspiration. I just wish they'd finish the construction so the outside's beauty would be more vivid. Also, if you have the stamina, take the dome tour when it's available, the view is wonderful.
We spent the morning at the Capitol and had some time to kill. Someone mentioned the church, which is across the street. It's beautiful! Who knew there was a church with so many TIFFANY windows? They are exquisite! Completely worth the stop.
