Manoa Falls is a great day out for the family! Did it today with ease, thought it would be difficult but 5 year olds were doing the trail. Highly recommend doing the trail as it would only take you an hour or two. $5 parking! Must bring a camera and some walking shoes. Thongs are useless as the higher you go the more muddier it gets!
If you are lucky you may see the falls like they show in the book...or you are unlucky and only see a trickling stream of water--like I did. But you won't know unless you trek 30 min there. It takes less than an hour round trip 50 minutes or so. Bring mosquitoes repellent and a walking stick if you have it. This is not a pave trail. Parking $5 you can park in the residential area for free, but that may require an additional 15-20 to walk there. Bathroom facilities and food are available. If you want to park for free, once you don't see houses together you have to turn around cause there won't be parking any closer.
The easiest way to find this hidden gem of Manoa Falls, is to use your GPS locator. The falls are located at the end of a quiet neighborhood, behind the city of Honolulu. Be sure to wear river shoes due to the muddy trail, the falls lie in a tropical rainforest, that sees frequent drizzles of rain in the valley. Also wear insect repellent while hiking, because there are lots of mosquitoes . Fashioning a walking stick, will help you keep your balance, on the muddy trail. There are faucets at the end of the trail, to help wash the mud off your feet.
this hike is muddy and not easy. you must be active to get up this path.it is usually muddy but the hike is awesome and the view at the Falls is spectacular
This is a relatively short and easy hike. The falls are the ultimate destination, but the forest itself is from another world or time. Giant trees and bamboo reach for the skies. Ancient vines hang like streams of water from branches far above. Ferns and plants with giant leaves spread broadly. Wear sturdy shoes. The trail is uneven in many places and can be muddy after a rainfall. The falls are tall but not exceptional or breathtaking. It was a nice change of scenery from being at the beach. Wear bug spray. The mosquitos started biting right at the parking lot.
It was a great hike but we came expecting a waterfall and if there was to be no waterfall at least a sign at the car park advising that fact so visitors could make up their mind if they still wanted to hike. There were a great number of visitors who were not happy especially the ones with young children.Maybe a permanent sign that could be adjusted....full flow.....half flow....trickle.....dry.Beautiful forest.
We decided to get away from the busy Waikiki Beach and take this short hike to get away from the crowds. Its an easy and beautiful hike that takes about an hour - or longer if you take a lot of photos. The waterfall wasn't great but still worth the hike.
We absolutely loved this hike. When you walk up the road into the forest, it feels like you have entered Jurassic Park. The trees and plants are large and lush. The climb to the waterfall is beautiful but can be slippery in places. Definitely, leave the flip flops at home. Also wear something you don't mind getting dirty, but it is worth it. The hike is beautiful.
You will not need hiking shoes to do this hike but you should not do it in flip flops. It rains frequently around this area and the path will become very slick over the compacted mud. Many people were walking down with muddy shirts wearing flip flops. The waterfall was cool, it was not much of a waterfall when we went though. Great hike to see nature and birds.
The hike to Manoa Fall is an easy one, though muddy given the amount of rain the area gets, so bring shoes you do not care that much about. The hike up is through a forest, which makes the trail enjoyable even on a hot day. The trail takes you right to the base of the falls, which gives you a great photo opportunity. While not the biggest waterfall, it is impressive to be able to get close to the base and see the full height. There is not a fee for the hike, but $5 for parking. There is also a fun shop at the base which has some cool local artists spotlighted, if you are looking for souvenirs.
