This attraction offers a wealth of information to the casual visitor but, to the right observer, it can present great detail on everyday life of its time.Very worthwhile!! Highly recommended! The guided tour is well worth the small fee. (The fees are used for the upkeep of the property and all of the guides etc are volunteers. )
Very interesting home with original furnishings. You don't see that very often. We had a great tour and very personable guide. If interested in local history, this is a must see for you. Great family stop.
This house is beautiful. Though not that elaborate on the outside the inside was amazing. Most of the pieces are original to the house. The preservation is amazing. We loved the house. If your a history buff and love old houses this is a nice hour and a half tour. However imo it would have been better at just 45 mins. Most of the tour is based on the Hixon family. For me it was just too many details. Who married who, what they did, and where they lived after the house. I would have preferred a shorter tour more based on the house. By the end it was dragging along My recommendation would be to try and see it with just your party. Then ask to just focus on the house. Overall it was interesting and we were glad we went, just are sure you plan on staying for a while.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour given by a very knowledgeable and personable guide who was accompanied by her granddaughter (both in period dress.) The woodwork, parquet flooring, original wall paper and furnishings were amazing. Thank you to the Hixon family for preserving and sharing this legacy that so well tells the family history and its connection to the history of LaCrosse. Highly recommended!
If you want to see how a Wisconsin world traveled family lived in the late 1800's, you will only get one chance. That's why its worth doing the Hixon house tour. This house was literally closed for 70 years, and you will see 90% the original furnishings and artwork. It is a national treasure and worth the visit.
This is a house that was owned by a family that was important to La Crosse. The family did have money, so the home was decorated in the most stylish themes of the time. Many beautiful things to see at the house, & get a taste of how things were in that day.
A beautiful house. Restored to original. . The history of LaCross is tied to this historic home. It is a must see.
Enjoyed Charlie and his knowledge of the house and the area. My husband and I really enjoyed it. Would definitely hit this attraction when coming to La Crosse.
We visited on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 10:00 am. We were the only people there so we had the full attention of the tour guide.Built by a lumber baron on the 1800s and furnished over the years with great examples of wealth at the turn of the century (1890s to 1920s).Perhaps unassuming from the outside, but a grand treasure inside. Well worth the 45 minute tour.
Knowledgeable tour staff, interesting tour information and history, and great character to the house. Not allowed to take pictures, but they give you a newspaper at the end of the tour full of pictures and the history.
