I had been meaning to stop here since I had first seen the signs a year ago. I thought it was new to the area, but discovered the museum is in a temporary home while the main building is remodeled. My family and I decided to make the trip on a cold Saturday since it is much closer than the Pittsburgh museums. To our surprise both the parking and admission were free, though donations are requested. The current space is small so the collections a display are limited but very interesting. We noticed a children's art class taking place and enjoyed using the "creation station" upstairs to create our own artwork. The volunteers were friendly and informative. We learned about many different activities and events that the museum offers and look forward to participating in many of those. We are excited to visit the main building when it reopens this Fall.
Great location on Academy Hill. Fine variety of exhibits. Christmas train and toy display enjoyable.
Thanks so much for your review of Westmoreland @rt 30, our temporary space. It's wonderful to hear compliments of our staff. They work hard to provide a great experience for every visitor. We're glad you enjoyed your visit and hope you'll visit us when we reopen the newly renovated and expanded Museum in late Summer 2015.

We are so glad your granddaughter had such a great time and was inspired. This is why we are here. Hope to see both of you again soon! Thanks so much for the review.
It's worth the stop, and you won't be disappointed. Keep in mind that Westmoreland County is the tenth largest county in Pennsylvania, therefore with that knowledge, you should anticipate a decent museum.
Thank you for your review! We are so glad you had a great experience with our docents and enjoyed your experience.
My hubby and I checked out this museum while on a day trip from Pittsburgh. I was actually impressed that a little town like this would have such a nice museum. The museum was well kept, had interesting pieces and my favorite thing was it's size! We visit a lot of museums and as someone who can only take in so much art in a given day and my back only so much standing on hard floors, this museum was the perfect size as it takes about 1.5-2hrs to get through. My only complaint is that they didn't have very good descriptions for all the pieces as almost all other museums do. But they don't charge an entrance fee and it was definitely worth visiting once.
I've visited twice now, and I'm still surprised that this gem of a museum is so close to where I live. You won't be disappointed in this small but impressive museum.
A small museum, but it has a surprisingly nice collection of American art. Building and surrounding town very pleasing.
Have been going to this museum all my life but had not been there for a few years since moving away. We had time this trip so decided to past some time with an old freind. It is indeed a small gem that many overlook. The collections have grown and it was interesting to see the changes but the unique atmosphere remains. It has never had the stiffness of many museums and is somewhat eclectic. They are lots of activities and kids of all ages are welcome.
This is the sort of place that locals drive past all the time. When you take the time to stop in and look around, you'll think "why haven't I been here before?"There is a nice exhibit to what Pittsburgh used to be - I think every kid should see some of that. They also host some of the local talent for concerts (Stage Right, Suzuki School of Music, etc.) If you haven't been there, you should go!
Thanks so much for your review and mention of our Art on Tap 5.2.7 monthly event! We absolutely love planning and hosting them. It's great socializing with all the wonderful people in the community!
Thanks so much for your review!
