Awesome place for a time back in history on the former reading lines each train ride is 40 mins and runs on the hour your choice is to ride in an open air car or a coach or a red caboose you can't find a better train ride most trip within paying one price can ride all day !!! the wk&s also is always looking for help on there railroad they don't get paid this all for the love of railroading manager john f. Hartman and his staff/crew is here to help you in any way and on there grounds has an awesome ho train display when open the wk&s is in southern berks county in PA, so won't you hop aboard and take a ride on the wk&s railroad ?
Nice train complete with a caboose you can ride in. Very nice restored. About a 6 mile ride..takes about 45 min. Goes slow and wooded area. Some beautiful gardens and homes along the way. The staff was nice about being helpful and happy we came. Cute tickets. Only open on the weekends I think. Check for their schedule. Seasonal rides are available.
The web site for WK&S has a train schedule, but we went there thinking it would be open to tour (walk aboard and see) on last Monday. It turns out it is run by volunteers and the trains and buildings were closed. It's a cool collection of train cars, station, and locomotives, but you will not see the insides unless you go when the trains are running.
We rode the train ride for their Halloween Spooktacular. It was an excellent ride for children and not scary at all. Our toddler loved it and so did our 8 year old. The train ride was a little shorter than I had expected.
My family went here for the ride with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Our daughter, who was four at the time, loved it. Santa and Mrs. Claus go through every car and make sure to say hi to every child and take pictures with them, if desired. The train ride itself is very basic, going along one track for a ways before stopping then heading back the way we came. The train cars are heated, I believe, which is nice if you go during the fall or winter. After taking our train ride, we are given a little TastyKake treat, nothing great, but if you're a child you'll love it.There's a small gift shop, and there's a train car that you can walk through that has an elaborate model train scene with a conductor there who can tell you more about trains.Overall, a great little ride for the family. Check their website for other types of programs as they change them up throughout the year.
At Kempton you can grab a snack, ride a scenic train, even celebrate your child's birthday on the caboose. It is VERY affordable and at times there are events on the grounds next to the station. It is not far from Crystal Cave, so it is easy to make a day seeing many different sights. We have gone many times and will continue to visit.
If you have children that love trains, make sure to visit WK&S. This is an all volunteer place run by people passionate about trains. Buy a ticket a rid as many times as you like that day. Ride is about 40 min round trip. Don't forget to check out the model train display behind the ticket booth. Coupons available on their website or various local coupon books.
Cute idea.. the local theater put on an interactive murder mystery play while the train moved. However, it was difficult to hear the actors and was there was much delay between scenes due to the actors and actresses having to act the same scene on both trains.
Have ridden the WK&S a few different times over the past few years and always have enjoyed the experience. it is a very pretty ride, the equipment is beautifully restored, (hard to imagine with an all volunteer crew) and the crews are very friendly. It is a little off the beaten path but well worth the visit.
For kids who love trains this is it. Depending on the day, you take a diesel or steam train through the countryside for about 15 minutes and stop. Then the engine is uncoupled, trundles past you and recouples to what had been the back of the train and the ride resumes. Very exciting for young children to watch. Everyone at WK&S really loves what they do, they are very friendly and happy to answer all questions. They offer events through the year, kids day, wine and cheese, and seasonal holiday specials.
We have a pre-teen & a teen, so were not sure if this would be up their alley... they enjoyed themselves very much! And so did we, as we sat in the old coach seats watching the countryside ramble slowly by. A beautiful day, extremely friendly staff who seem to really enjoy what they do, and a testament to the joys of riding the rails. The pace is leisurely, and there is nothing remarkable about the trip - but it's such a sweet way to while away an hour, and the pace and rumbling along the track leads to great conversation and daydreams...Glad we did it.
WK&S Railroad is a hidden secret in rural Kempton. Whether you are a train buff or not. WK&S is simply, fun. Run by volunteers, some local, some not so local, as a local family we love the chance to step back in time for a Christmas ride, a fall ride ir whatever. This is a great excursion for any time of the year!
We went this weekend and the place was great. I have been to a few train station in my area and this one was the best. The staff was great and chearful. The open car was great, my son loved being outside and feeling the breeze. I would highly recommend this railroad and will be returning for another visit.
Great Field Trip we go every year with SNSCC! Friendly staff, children get a ticket punched by ticket taker, eating area and bathrooms avaliable! Great class or family trip!
Just a nice getaway and time with family and friends. Scenic and slow paced.
