1852 herr family homestead

Drove to see the homestead and it was closed for the season due to water damage. There was no message on when it would re-open or when the season is over. Pity. I was looking forward to the famed tour.

I have family in Lancaster County, so I visit the area frequently. As I was exiting Hwy. 283 last week, I saw a small roadside sign alerting travelers to the proximity of the Herr Family Homestead. A group of us decided to visit Sunday afternoon. What a gem! It's a free tour (they do accept donations for upkeep), and the greeter and docent were outgoing and knowledgeable. Visitors are encouraged to take a closer look at historical artifacts, and there are no ropes or gates to stop visitors from walking right up to this little slice of history to get that closer look. The Herr Family Homestead is real Lancaster County. The Herrs were not Plain, but this is a place you won't want to miss seeing. They're open Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4 P.M.

Wonderful tour of a charming home. Tour guide had a good personality and very down to earth making the tour very pleasant. No admission was taken but there is a donation box. Beautiful grounds with flowers and flowering trees.
