If you like art and history this is place to be. Was surprised to see a lot of Buddha and Indian culture
I really dislike giving an art museum a bad rating because my husband and I are very supportive of the arts. We try to visit the art museum, attend music venues, and see theater shows in every town/city we visit. First, it was overpriced at $7/person. My husband and I were not rushed and still went through the whole museum in an hour and a half. We also didn't care for much of the art. It was very limited and disappointing. Some of the modern art was simply ugly or just uninspiring. We also didn't like the layout traveling from one building to another. It felt very disjointed. With that said, there were a few exhibits we enjoyed like "The Avalon Restaurant" by Lisa Lichtenfels and the "Carousel". There were also some paintings we liked, but, again, not enough to warrant $7/person.
The Erie Art Museum is truly a big little museum. There is more than enough art in the various galleries to give you a sense of beauty and calm for a few hours. Many of the gallery exhibits are changed on a regular basis.
Fantastic collection - very varied, from Asian to contemporary, beautiful building, somewhat of a maze, but very well done. A hidden gem.
for several years now the Erie Art Museum has been one of the best small institutions in the US. but don't take my word for it:"The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has selected the Erie Art Museum as one of only ten libraries and museums to receive the 2011 National Medal for Museum and Library Service.Founded in1898 as an artists' association, the Erie Art Museum is the only comprehensive visual arts facility in northwest Pennsylvania. The Museum anchors downtown Erie’s cultural and economic revitalization and serves an audience of more than 50,000 people every year, as well as over 400 artists, through public art programs, exhibitions, artist service programs, and supporting a local gallery scene by organizing regular Gallery Nights—coordinated openings typically involving a dozen commercial and college galleries. The Erie Art Museum was granted the National Medal by the IMLS because of its innovativeprogramming and service to a wide public audience. The Museum serves a broad-spectrumaudience regionally. Educators and students, pre-K to college, are served through in-service andother formal training programs, including Teacher Week, artist residency activities, internships,after-school programs, and the innovative exhibition program Kids As Curators. A diversepublic, including racial and ethnic minorities and people of all income brackets, is addressedthrough free admission programs, including the Blues & Jazz Festival at Frontier Park thatattracts 15,000 to 20,000 annually. The Erie Art Museum has been recognized for excellence within the traditional realm ofpresenting quality exhibitions, but also for its efforts to broaden exposure to art and theperception of what represents art, as well as to foster awareness and involvement in communityand societal issues. The Museum’s tour program, for example, rejects the conventional talkinghead docent model. It enables viewers to bring their own experiences to understanding works of art through the use of Visual Thinking Strategies, art-making activities, and dialogue with living artists."If you only go to one place in Eire, PA this is the spot. You won't regret it.
We visited yesterday during CelebrateErie. Admission was free during the event. Lovely small art museum right in the city. Enjoyed the exhibit on EcoArt -- paintings, photos and sculpture all dealing with environmental issues. Also enjoyed the Joseph Plavcan exhibit. Lovely space.
Art museum is a fantastic place to nurture spirits, especially during a raining day. Our second day during our visit was a raining day so we went visit the art museum. During the summer, there is a concert during lunch time every Wednesday.
an interesting variety of art................free on Wednesdays, which was a delightful surprise. Nice cafe, whose food looked quite tempting, although we did not partake.
The first thing that pleased me about visiting Erie's art museum is that there were ample parkings all around the place, within walking distance. So you wont have to stress that part of your trip even though you're going downtown. The entry fees were reasonable. The exhibitions were memorable, the beautiful lighting made it a more enjoyable experience. Navigating the museum was easy with the directions posted all over the place. The reception's staff were cheerful and very friendly. You must visit the gift shop as they do have lots of fun, quirky stuff for sale. The little cafe has a great selection of pastries and local coffee, a perfect end to your museum tour. I suggest you visit during morning hours and have brunch over there. No complaints whatsoever, excellent.
This is a great place on a Wednesday (I think it is free every Wednesday) the place is large, quiet and there are so many things to admire! This is a must do at least once!!!
My children took a field trip to the museum while I was in a business conference. They had a blast there, took lots of pictures on their ipod and learned a lot.
Very nice museum with nice exhibits from both local and national artists. Admission is free on wednsdays. Free outdoor concerts in the summer on wednsday also. Reasonably priced classes held throught the year if you would like to learn to draw, paint or do photography.
I say little because I have been to much larger collections, but this was a great museum for a smaller town. We loved the local artist featured here. I would love to be able to buy prints. Joseph Plavcan was my favorite paintings. We loved the basement of the old build, just a great added feature.
A great little museum that had a Skrebneski photo exhibit, great looks into local artists and historic venues as well. A great space for their art combining a great old building and new space as well.
Has always been a great museum but under the direction of John Vanco the museum has greatly expanded and is now able to host larger and more varied venues. A huge project done correctly. Kudos.
