If you have the extra money this is worth it, being able to sit on the bus as they take you through the town and battlefield stopping at the sites, the tour guide makes the trip not only educational but fun as well, but it is a bit pricey.
Further to my excellent stay at Liaison Capital Hill Hotel DC between the 24 to 26 August 2014. With a good selection of sightseeing tours available, I took the day trip from Union Station DC to Gettysburg Battlefield in Pennsylvania via local tour operators Viator. This is a not to miss trip depicting a very historic occasion in America's history. First stop was in the town of Gettysburg to explore a building where Confederate soldiers hid out during the battle and while there we assumed the identity of a soldier's name that fought in the battle. The next place of interest was the short trip to the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum to watch a film and a fantastic military display of the battle with sound effects. Another local guide joined us on the bus to take us through all the relevant aspects of the battle particularly near Little Round Top and other nearby landmarks of major importance. We spent some time visiting these important locations learning about the various battles that took place.
So glad you had a great time. I will make sure to pass your compliments along to the proper person.
This is an excellent tour. The guide was very informative and there were several stops on the battlefield. You are wearing headphones so you can hear the tour guide.
We bought the Value Package which included the Film, Cyclorama and Museum Experience and Battlefield Bus Tour. Go to http://www.gettysburgfoundation.org/18/ticket-prices-and-packages to get this deal. I highly recommend doing all. Allow a little more than 1/2 a day. The Gettysburg bus tour is presented by a Licensed Battlefield tour Guide that is well versed with their knowledge of the battle. They bring the battle to life. This is a great place to spend the day if you are at all interested in the Gettysburg civil war. Would take the tour again if ever I get the opportunity!
This was an amazing tour. I had a strong interest in the history at Gettysburg, but even my friend who didn't, developed one during the tour due to such an excellent guide. Very informative, funny, knowledgeable, passionate, and had a remarkable ability bring the history of Gettysburg to life so we could really understand and appreciate what happened. No one on the bus even got to tip the guide, as he got off and was gone before anyone else got off, but he was possibly the most deserving guide on our whole 7 week trip.
We visited Gettysburg with our family and we had a teenager on board. She thought it was the best historical site she's visited in the US so far. I recommend to start with the museum to go on a bus tour equipped with the knowledge, especially, if you're are a foreigner like me. The heroic acts and stories were truly inspirational. Two thumbs up!
As a civil war buff, my whole adult life I wanted to visit the Gettysburg battlefield. We made reservations with the Gettysburg Battlefield Bus Tours and boarded a bus with other strangers with a very knowledgeable but a little cocky licensed guide. This allowed all of our party, including our car driver to enjoy and see the whole tour as well. The bus stopped several times and we were invited to get off the bus at prearranged stops. Being there and taking the tour really gave us a clear understanding of how it all came down. Can't wait to go back and explore the quaint little town of Gettysburg.
I was glad I took this tour with my family. The bus driver was awesome and the tour guide was phenomenal!! His knowledge of the battle was like no other. I highly advise to take this your if this is your first time at Gettysburg!
We went on the tour that was done by a tour guide. Bus was comfortable and tour was very informative. I would have liked to see more but time was short and husband has difficulty walking.
Battlefield tour guide was excellent. She was very informative and threw in some humor! The two hour trip is well worth the time to hear the history of the battle.
My boyfriend and I took the 10am tour and we had a phenomenal guide. Her name was Christina and she was so well educated about the 3 days of battle. I learned so much and we got to see a lot. The bus only stops at Little Round top, but there are plenty of opportunities to take photos. This is a great tour to take. You will see a ton and it will help highlight some areas that you might be interested in traveling back too!! Dress accordingly for the time of year and if you think you want to sit up top, just bring a blanket. As for branches, the drivers do the best they can but if a lot of people are parked on the sides of roadways you might just have to duck. No big deal!! Thanks to the staff for the great history lesson.
I loved this tour! Our tour guide and the bus driver were knowledgeable, friendly and funny! It was awesome to see where the Confederates were positioned on the hillside, the many monuments erected in the battlefields, just everything! Great price, too-$30 for a 2 hour bus tour :)
We only had a short period of time in Gettysburg on our way from Washington DC to Pittsburgh and arrived at the Visitor centre with only enough time to do the Bus tour so we paid and rushed to get the last possible bus we could and boy were we glad we did. Like most folks we had hard of the American Civil War at school but never understood the full picture nor the sadness of the carnage done by fellow Americans to fellow Americans. Whilst the tour was very sad when you think of that it was so informative and the 2+ hours flew by and we wished we had more time to do the rest of the attractions. My suggestion get there early and spend the day.
My family and I did the double decker bus tour. Word of advice - take a jacket! lolThe tour lasted about two hours, and it was incredibly informative. I must admit, I couldn't take everything in the guide was saying to us over the headphones....it's a lot of information in such a short time period. But if you're into history, or just want to learn a little it more about the battle and the fields, then definitely take a tour. There were two stops while on the tour - one was for a toilet break, and the other was a stop at Little Round Top for about 10 minutes to take photos. And they warn you at the beginning to look out for low hanging branches, etc. I got whacked in the face by a leaf, and going about 25mph, that sucker hurt! lol
